Barney Fong Obituary

Barney M. Fong

August 6, 1934 - August 29, 2016

Barney M. Fong passed away early Monday morning after suffering from complications related to the vascular surgery performed 2 days before. Barney is survived by his best friend and wife of 56 years, Janet. He is also survived by his loving children, Juliet Peters (Kent), Suzanne Deardorff (PK), and Barry Fong (Solita). Barney is also survived by six grandsons, Michael Fong (Heidi), Blake and Scott Peters, Justin and Zachary Fong and Kai Deardorff. He is also survived by his great-granddaughters Makena and Kaia Fong, his brothers Rodney Fong, Henry Fong (Wanda) and Willie Fong (Bonnie) and many other nieces and nephews. Barney was predeceased by his parents, Hon and Jenny Fong and brother John Fong.
Barney was born in San Francisco and spent his childhood in Chinatown, playing on the streets and rooftops with his brothers and buddies. He worked at the family butcher shop, Tuck Hing while growing up. After graduating from Commerce High School, Barney joined the Army and served in Korea. Upon returning from Korea, Barney attended UC Berkeley where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he joined Bank of America where he worked his entire 34 year career.
After retirement, Barney traveled extensively, sometimes with Janet, but more often than not, with his entire family. Family was central to everything Barney did in life and the family took frequent vacations together. Family dinners and game nights were frequent at the Fong residence in San Mateo, and Barney's presence at these events to come, will be deeply missed. Barney and Janet traveled around the world twice and touched down on all continents except Antarctica. Barney loved to golf and even had a hole in one! He was part-time chauffeur for his grandchildren and loved watching sports on TV, especially the CAL Bears and other bay area teams. He was loved so much by his family and many friends. Barney aka gramps will be missed more than words can describe.
Family and friends are invited to the Memorial Service at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's Funeral Home, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. If you wish to remember Barney with a donation, please consider Cameron House in San Francisco https://cameronhouse.org/ or J.W.
