Beatrice Stavrinides Obituary

Beatrice Stavrinides
October 16, 1936 - February 10, 2023
Beatrice "Bebe" Diane Stavrinides passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 10, 2023, after a brief illness.
Bebe was born in San Francisco to John and Novie Garabedian. She lost her father when she was 8 years old. Bebe was involved in the restaurant business for her entire life, having grown up helping around her mother's restaurant, the Cairo, from the time she was very young. Having the restaurant business in her blood, it was only natural that Bebe would open her own restaurant, while still running the Cairo when her mother no longer could.
La Cucina opened on Union Street on April 2, 1968, and before long was the restaurant of choice for locals and tourists alike. San Francisco dignitaries, athletes and Hollywood celebrities were consistently part of the customer base. La Cucina had a very loyal customer base, and some of those customers became lifelong friends to Bebe. She dedicated her life to running the restaurant, while never neglecting her responsibility of caring for her ailing mother and raising her 2 beautiful sons as a single parent.
In 1985, Bebe married the love of her life, Anthony Stavrinides, a man she had known for years, and they lived happily until his death in 2001. Tragedy struck in 2013, when Bebe lost her younger son, Edward, and a few short months later, her older son, John, passed away. These devastating blows were difficult for Bebe, but she endured for the sake of her family. She cherished her family above all, and nothing brought her more happiness than having her children and grandchildren together and at her side.
After 46 successful years, La Cucina closed its doors in the fall of 2014, and Bebe settled into retirement, but she never gave up her love of entertaining. Always the consummate hostess, Bebe loved to host luncheons, dinners and parties for her loved ones. She was a very proud San Francisco native, and she took pride in the fact that she had lived in the same zip code – 94123 - her entire life; she was a sports enthusiast who loyally followed the 49'ers, Giants and Warriors.
Bebe was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Anthony, her sons John and Edward, and her dear friend George Foundoulis, who was like a brother to her. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Laurie Diba, grandchildren David and Stevin, granddaughter Dina, grandson John (Melissa), great-grandchildren Marie Terry, Scarlet and Vincent Diba, her stepchildren, Jim Stavrinides (Kathleen), Elizabeth Stavrinides (Debra) and Nick Stavrinides, and step grandchildren Eli Stavrinides, Jessica Nikfar (Isaac), James Stavrinides (Shiva), great-grandchildren Victoria, Isaac and Arianna Nikfar, Leo Stavrinides. Step great-grandson Elham Stavrinides (d. 4/15/2020) preceded her in death. She is also survived by countless friends; no one was a stranger to Bebe. Her graciousness and compassion for others will be sorely missed, as will her love of life.
Funeral mass to be held at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church on Saturday, February 25. 2320 Green Street, San Francisco.

My husband and I lived around the corner from La Cucina from 1993 - 1999. We have a friend moving to the neighborhood now and Bebe and La Cucina were my first suggestion - but looking up the restaurant online, I was so saddened to hear of Bebe's passing earlier this year. Big Sigh.

I had a difficult pregnancy with twins during the time we lived there , and when I could make it out of our house, I only headed to La Cucina, not only for the fresh, healthy and tasty food, but because Bebe was so incredibly sweet and nice to me. After our twins were born, we continued to visit this magical place, bringing friends, and we have wonderful pictures of our children with Santa there!

Being so far away from home (East Coast), Bebe felt like a family member to us. I loved hearing about HER family, too, she was always so proud of them. When we visited San Francisco in 2010, our first stop was to say hi to her so she could see our twins, who were then 14, and it was like no time had passed. I am sorry we have not made it back there since then.

I send my sincere condolences to her family as Bebe was an INCREDIBLE GEM. Many people come and go in your life, but she is one I will always remember, with so much fondness! and gratitude! With big hugs to you all...

I have known Auntie Bebe since I was old enough to remember. She was a bridesmaid at my parents wedding when she was just 14 years old. Her son Johnny and I went to Galileo High School together. She was first cousin to my father, and the last of that generation. I will miss her so much.

My sincerest condolences to Bebe´s family and friends. What a wonderful, caring and giving person she was! La Cucina was a mainstay for us, especially for breakfast or brunch after Sunday Mass. A loving woman who will be sorely missed by our family. RIP, dear Bebe.

My parents socialized with Bebe and her first husband Benny. I played with her sons Eddie and John, who I just sadly learned are gone as well. I ate at the Cairo when it was open and attended the grand opening of La Cocina. I'll always remember Bebe as a beautiful, friendly woman. RIP.

Unforgettable..as the song goes. Bebe, will never be forgotten. She was one very special woman who touched the lives of so many and ours, in particular. We will forever cherish the memories of her delicious lunches, dinners and her phone calls always asking how we are. She was an Angel here on earth and now she is an Angel in Heaven, busily cooking her delicious meals for all who have gone before her. Rest in Peace, Bebe.... Yolanda and Joe

BeBe will be missed. She was a friend to everyone. My mom loved going to LaCucina, not only to have a meal but for seeing a friend or two. Many were very supportive when LaCucina had a fire. The restaurant came back stronger than ever. I had several luncheon meetings there & the nuns from Little Sisters of the poor loved her. On occasion, I would go in for a meal & there would be Ron Owens sitting at his favorite table.
I still have the red dress BeBe loaned me for a fun event. Miss you BeBe.
