Benjamin Hunter Obituary

Benjamin Conrad Hunter Passed away on Saturday, December 10 in Walnut Creek, California after a year's valiant struggle with cancer. Ben was born on February 23, 1965 in Berkeley, California to Dard and Mary Hunter. The second of four children, he was raised in various locations in Northern California and Colorado. He attended Miramonte High School in Orinda and the University of California at Los Angeles. At Miramonte, Ben wrestled for the varsity squad under legendary coach Roger A. Durant. He graduated in the class of 1982 with friends he held dear his entire life. At UCLA, Ben majored in Economics-Business and made similar lasting friends in the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, where he rose to the rank of President. Ben's professional career is defined by ambition, success, and entrepreneurial talent. His employment began in mutual fund sales for American Capital. He quickly mastered the art and left the firm with a friend to build their own investment company called Pillar Financial Services. This endeavor was successful, but Ben deemed it too slow-growing an industry for his liking. He made the unorthodox move to a sales position at the venerable Diamond Center jewelry store empire. Ben was equally successful at the Diamond Center, and appeared in several of its holiday-themed television commercials. His next jump was to Micro Connectors in Oakland, where he learned the business that was to define his career. He rose through the ranks to Sales Manager, and ultimately left the company to start his own. He founded Cables Unlimited in 1994 in Concord, and built the business into a highly successful brand in the field of wholesale distribution of computer cables and related peripherals. The run lasted 17 years, closely following the boom and bust tech industry cycles, and it provided a very comfortable living for Ben and his family. Ben is survived by his daughters Ashley and Hailey and ex-wife Maureen Hunter of Alamo; his parents Dard and Mary Hunter of The Sea Ranch; his sister Angela Trantham (Matt) of Martinez; his brother Dard (Leslie) of San Francisco and Davis; his beloved soulmate Amy Harich of Tampa, Florida, and nieces and nephews Dard Hunter, Emma Hunter, Hunter Trantham, and Austin Trantham. He was preceded in death by his sister Amy in 1968. His family remembers Ben as a devoted and loving father, son, brother, world traveler, and friend to many. Ben inspired all who knew him in his lust for life, positive outlook, and determination to beat the disease. He enjoyed a close relationship with God with acceptance earlier this year of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior being of particular importance to him. A memorial service will be held at Crosswinds Church in Dublin, California at 5:00 pm on Saturday, December 17. Ben's eternal resting place will be alongside his sister, aunt, grandparents, and great aunt and uncle in Red Bluff, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the East Bay in Ben's name.

Similar to Darryl Paul's entry, Ben's obituary was a recent find to which I was so saddened to discover. The Hunter family lived on Shenandoah in Stockton during the late 60's - early 70's. Hot summer days at the Beach Club, tossing a baseball with Ben and Dard in the Hunter's front yard, a spirited game of Life, and a miniature golf game led by Mr. Hunter for one of the boy's birthdays, etc... stirred from the recesses of my mind as I drove through the neighborhood last week while in Stockton for a business meeting. All my best to the Hunter family.

I accidentally came across Ben's obituary. I know this about 8 years to late and maybe no one will read it, but I knew Dard and Ben as a child when they lived in La Salle, Colorado and had not seen him since probably 1977 or 1978. I am sad to hear Ben has passed. We had a lot of fun as kids. We even got our picture taken by the local newspaper while we were sitting in a tree watching a baseball game. RIP old friend.

I wish I might have known Ben better. I remember the wonderful surprise we had when he and his brother, Dard, & two friends of theirs stopped to see us at our home in the Adirondacks.
Dard and Mary , you can be so proud of Ben and all that he meant to so many people. Love, Aunt Jeanette

The first memory of Ben that comes to mind will always be that he was the first employer to give me an opportunity to succeed when others would not. I worked for Ben for 5 years in the 1990s, and even after I left CU, I have probabaly thought of him everyday at work since then, because he taught me so many great sales/business fundamentals. When he was "on," he was unstoppable. I will always remember and cherish the good times we had together. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Ashley & Hailey, Dard & Mary, Angela & Dard, and the rest of the Hunter family.

I worked for Ben for 5 years and I must say his presents always made me nervous, not because I thought he was mean but because he had such a strong presents that was almost fatherly so I felt I had to be on my best behavior. Then I got to know him and he was such an awesome and fun person. Thank you ben for giving me the oportunity to share in some of the great memories at cu. you and john have a shot for me 8)

RIP Ben... We miss you

I will miss Ben for many things, but most for the knowledge of taking chances and helping me understand that others can see our potential, even if we don't see that potential within ourselves. He had given me the financial means and education to purchase my home and the confidence that I truly can accomplish anything I set out to do...as long as I have a plan and keep my eye on the ball. I infinitely thank you Ben. Tony Pecci (Concord, CA)

I'm shocked and saddened to hear about Ben's passing. I was one of Ben's first warehouse workers back in the day. In fact I was the only one for awhile. He gave me my first shot at sales and I learned a lot from him. I think I worked for him at least three times over the years at Cables Unlimited.
