Bernice Smith Obituary
Bernice was predeceased by her devoted husband of over 60 years, John Patrick, infant son Patrick Joseph, daughter Kathleen Frances McCallum, grandsons Christopher Todd and Douglas Allen McCallum, and twin great granddaughters Allison Bernice and Ashley Marie Smith.
Bernice is survived by her only sibling, Louise Frances Rothschiller, two sons, Patrick Leonard (MaryAnne Teeter) of French Lick, Indiana, and Michael Joseph of Rio Vista, California, grandchildren MaryCatherine Patricia Jurczyk (Michael), Patricia Marie Smith (Brian Smith), John Francis Smith (Angela), Kevin Patrick Smith, Jennifer Michelle Bach (Steve), Frances Linda Bernice Russell (Paul), and great grandchildren Thomas Francis and Annika Marie Jurczyk, Brianna Jean and Samantha Maryanne Smith, Zachary John and Aubrie Elizabeth Smith, Kevin Patrick and Austin Francis Smith, Kayla Leighanne Bach, and Jonathan, Morgan Elizabeth and Evan Gregory Russell.
Bernice worked in the peach cannery to support her college education; she graduated from Yuba County Community College and went on to graduate from San Francisco State College in the class of 1940. She was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse for a period and later went on to manage the office of Homewood Terrace, a Jewish childcare agency.
She and Pat travelled extensively throughout Europe and parts of the Far East. As grandparents, they followed the moves of their eldest son to Spain, New York State, Charleston, SC, Guam, and South Bend, Indiana where Patrick proudly served in the US Navy.
Bernice was the family matriarch and a source of constant comfort and love for generations of her family. She was a devoted Catholic. She enjoyed square dancing, gardening, creating and continuously updating photo albums, and she made tremendous strides tracing family genealogy, for which we are grateful.
Friends may visit Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 10:00am at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City, CA where a Funeral Service will begin at 11:00am. A committal service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
The family wishes to thank Raksha Care Home and Kaiser Permanente Hospice for the excellent care provided to Bernice.

Reading of your passing was a shock. You were such a part of my family for my entire life and I cherish the memories you gave us. Those doors to heaven are wide open waiting for you. I will miss you but know you are going to a better place.

Dear Smith family,
My heart felt condolences for the loss of Bernice. I'm happy for her to unite with Pat and her cousins Margaret Nutley and Betty. I remember many happy parties at her house. Aunt Bernice was a great LADY. She will be missed. It is comforting to know she is with the love of her life square dancing and more than likely tending to the Lords garden. My condolences to the rest of the family.
