Bruce Wolfe Obituary

Bruce Wolfe
March 29, 1941 - December 27, 2022
Bruce was born March 29,1941 in Santa Monica, California to Elsie June and Vance Wolfe. He grew up in Redwood City and attended Sequoia high school. In 1957 Bruce and his wife-to-be, Linda, met in Redwood City and began their life-long love. They married on September 2,1962 and gave birth to their first daughter, Heather in 1966. They moved to Piedmont, California in1967 and welcomed their second child, Hilary, in 1968.
Bruce studied art at San Jose State University and the Art Institute of San Francisco. Additionally, he studied with renowned artists Bettina Steinke and Bruno Lucchesi. Adept in both oils and clay, he taught figure painting and sculpture at several Northern California art schools. Bruce was a fellow in the National Sculpture Society and received an honorary Doctorate from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Bruce had just turned 20 years old when he was employed by one of the largest advertising agencies, Foote, Cone & Belding as an art director where he began to make a name for himself in the agency world, doing design, layout and television. In his downtime he painted and sculpted people portraits and was even commissioned to do the memorial bronze of Kurt Herbert Adler in the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House.
At the age of 30 Bruce left the ad agency business to focus on his commercial illustration career, and did award-winning work for Levi's, Gallo, Henry Weinhard, Mastercard and Budweiser Anhauser Busch. Other notable commissions included illustrating campaigns for San Miguel Beer, Kawasaki, Tahoe and Mendocino Music Festivals, U.S. Women's Ski team, Sony Music, Stanford University, Lucas Films, Chevron, Dole, HP, Nestle's, Ringling Bros Circus, Rolling Stone magazine, Sierra Club, Time-Life Books, U.S. Forest Service, Celestial Seasonings, NASA, Esquire, Kiss, and Pink Floyd to name a few.
In 1992 Bruce expanded his talents to sculpture and was commissioned to do a series of significant pieces for St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA. His sculpture work included a statue of Tony Bennett on the lawn of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, Frederick Douglass, Arnold Palmer, Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Barbara Jordan, Margaret Thatcher, Lamar Hunt, Chong-Moon Lee, and four figures at the Old Mission in Santa Barbara, including Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Ken Coit, his last work of art, was completed and installed in October at The University of Arizona.
Bruce lived in Piedmont California, where he raised his family and lived for more than 50 years. Vacations and weekends were spent with his family in Elk, California where he painted, walked the beach and hiked.
Bruce is survived by his wife Linda, his two children, Heather and Hilary, his brother Steve, and his grandchildren, Walker, Audrey and Blair.

Oh so sorry to just discover this sad news of Bruce´s passing. I was just going to call him and ask for some painting advice. I will always treasure my experiences of working for Bruce as a model. He did some gorgeous paintings of me. We had such great conversations about politics, spirituality, art...
everything really. Besides his enormous talent and great sense of humor, he was a solid, honest, and good man with a generous spirit. Condolences to Linda and family.

Dear Linda, family and friends,
I want to share this great photo of Bruce and his dear friend and fellow sculptor, Bruno Lucchesi. I took it February 10, 2006, in the parking lot of Scottsdale Artists' School when the class was breaking for lunch.
Bruno was teaching and Bruce was there for old times sake. Bruce also taught at the school.
It was a great class, very inspiring to have two great - yet totally unpretentious - talents in one room.
Everyone who knew Bruce will miss him. He was truly one of a kind and an amazing talent and mentor.
My deepest condolences to Linda and family and friends.
Janis Williamson from Anchorage, Alaska, or, as Bruce called it, "a little southeast of Nome."

Linda, I just found out by chance of Bruce's passing and I cannot tell you how many times I almost picked up the phone to call him. I thought I'd say, "Hey Bruce this is a blast from the past how about that Ed Zak" as an opener. I actually thought he'd probably have his calls screened and then I'd think, maybe not. He was such a hands on guy, unpretentious, down to earth, and real. Anyway, I still have the original art he did for me eons ago when I was an art director. I saw an article actually buy a painter who became a good friend of Bruce and he gave the eulogy at his memorial. He spoke of Bruce's life and how he was in awe of him and later in their friendship painted Bruces portrait which was great by the way, you must really treasure it. He also spoke about how Bruce worked his craft like the old masters and about his studio literally steps from his home, filled with all his reference materials and such. Well, It took me back to my first experience with him, and I believe before he built his now studio, it was down stairs and I was blown away too by it all. I actually think of him on the same level as a Rockwell, Leyendecter, and NC Wyeth, he was such an amazing talent. So now, hopefully some how he knows I reached out to at least you, Linda. BTW we always had something in common, Linda is my wife's name too.

Bruce led a drawing salon every Wed. eve at the old CCAC for many years. A mutual friend, Ed Zak, got Bruce to include me in that group of some 15 or so very, very talented artist. I never missed a night for some 10 years.

Bruce had such an incredible talent. Drawing, painting, and of course his totally amazing sculpting abilities. He truly was, in the old sense, a master. Everything he produced just radiated with the joy you knew he felt for his occupation.
It was intimidating to watch him work. The confidence, fluidity, sensitivity, knowledge and ingenuity, just flowed from his hands.

I had the opportunity to go up to his studio in Piedmont. Lordy, it was an artist dream. Massive windows brought in volumes of natural light. Work areas were so beautifully planned. From the former 2 car garage, he created an incredible
place to do his creations.

As a person, I often wished that I could have known him better. But I was/am an artist with, by comparison, such meager skills, I was happy just to be able to say that I knew him.

He was old school. A master. A truly fine human being. And one of the nicest, generous and kind people to have graced the world with his time here. For those who did not know him, he will be remembered through his work. For those that did, his close friends and family, he will be remembered for the just incredible human being he was. Good bye Bruce.

My heartfelt condolence to you, Linda and family. Sorry that distance kept me from getting to know you better. Soul brothers 'till the end, I will truly miss my beloved friend, colleague and hero. Bruce's sculpture and painting rank among the finest of our time, and far beyond. A kind heart and gentle soul, Bruce, with such great passion, is a perfect example of how each of us should approach life -- and our ultimate destiny. With Love...

I just saw this in the NSS bulletin. We are both so sorry to hear of your loss.
Several years ago, my wife and I were in the Bay Area and asked if we could visit. Although he didn´t know us, he graciously said yes, and we spent at least an hour (probably more) hanging out with him in his studio as he worked.
(Our life and career paths are similar, advertising to fine art, though I am about two decades behind him.)
He was one of my creative heroes, and was so generous with his time. Our visit meant a lot to me. On a personal note, wife and I met in our late 20s and we cannot imagine how it must feel to have lost your lifelong partner. Though we met you only briefly, we have you in our thoughts today.

My condolences to the family. I met Bruce and his grandson Walker at the foundry last summer. I was struck by how humble and gracious he was while also taking an interest in my work. The mastery and magnitude of his life's work is truly great.

Bruce was a deep thinker, as well as a remarkable artist. And underneath the high standards and drive of a great artist, he had a big heart.

I hope he is enjoying the beauty of heaven right now, and I wish his family and friends comfort and good memories.

We will miss watching and enjoying his creative process...as we bantered over the creek or enjoyed a tour of the studio...we loved having him as our neighbor and an inspiration for beauty and creativity. Will miss his friendly conversation. Positive thoughts to the artist community he fostered and the best to his family as they recall and navigate through happy memories...
