Passed away at the age of 72 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on 6/25/13 after a seven month battle with cancer. Carl was born 10/19/40 and raised in San Francisco's Excelsior District. Carl was a proud retired San Francisco Police Inspector, graduate of Balboa H.S. and S.F. City College, where he earned his degree in Criminology. Prior to entering the S.F.P.D. Carl served his country in the U.S. Army. Carl entered the S.F.P.D. in Sept. 1964 and this was the beginning of a distinguished police career culminating to his appointment to the elite Homicide Unit. As an Inspector in Homicide, Carl continued to shine playing an intricate role in solving many high-profile cases, including the breaking of the Zebra and Night Stalker investigations.
Carl is survived by his loving wife Kristine, sons Brian and Christian, adoring granddaughter Kaylyn, loving Aunt Betty Klotz, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Liz Perez. Carl was predeceased by his parents Carl and Vera Klotz and Uncle Fred Klotz.
Carl was a loved member of Indian Valley Golf Course and the N.G.A., where he enjoyed many happy days with his friends. Carl was a kind, generous, caring man whose sense of humor will be missed by many. Carl was always optimistic and ready with a quick laugh and smile.

It was a pleasure knowing Carl when we were both in the Inspectors Bureau of the SFPD. He was the consummate investigator and was not afraid to ask a lot of questions about union business. My condolences to his family and friends--Paul Chignell

“Hey, let me tell you something kid…” and my law enforcement career began. I became a Deputy U.S. Marshal in San Francisco in 1998. I was almost immediately partnered with Carl who was working as a contract guard for the USMS. Ironically, I as the new deputy A.K.A. “FNG” , was in charge when working with Carl. In reality Carl was training me. Carl shared a lifetime of experience with me and taught me more than any academy or class. I will never forget the humor, wisdom and personal friendship we had. I am forever grateful for the impact Carl made on my life personally and professionally.
Kris and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was so sad to learn of Carl's passing. I was lucky enough to know Carl at SFPD and over the past few years at Indian Valley. I could plan on getting a hug from Carl when I finished the front nine and he was already done with 18 and having lunch with friends. Carl was a sweetheart and he will be missed.
