Carla Johnson Obituary

Carla Jean Johnson

Carla Jean Johnson, 56, died on June 12, 2016 of breast cancer in the arms of her wife, Anna Kuperberg, in their Bernal Heights home.

Carla's 27 years of service to the City of San Francisco will endure in its sidewalks, buildings, and the impact she left on thousands of people.
As the Director of the Mayor's Office on Disability, Carla believed that accessibility should be a priority in the design of every city building, event, website, and service. The Board of Supervisors recently proclaimed, "She always went above and beyond the call of duty to help everyone in need. She personified a generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion."

Carla had also served the City as the Deputy Director of the Department of Building Inspection and a carpenter for the Department of Public Works.

In the 1980s Carla was a general contractor specializing in the restoration of Victorian houses. Her trim carpentry was beautiful, precise, and respectful of historic preservation. She was always happiest in her woodshop and wanted to be remembered as a carpenter.

In her private life she was known as the neighbor who swept leaves, not only in front of her house but up and down the entire block. Both sides. Carla was admired and loved for her gentleness, strength, humility and unwavering integrity. She was the person who stopped to smile and look you in the eye. Helped with home repairs. Found lost dogs and returned them to their owners. Watched your house while you were gone. Bought you a beer.

Carla was an alum of UC Berkeley. Go Bears!
Carla is survived by her wife, Anna Kuperberg; mother, Virginia Zwetzig; and siblings Suzi Funahara, Charles Johnson, Karla Fittipaldi, Mary Pell, and John Zwetzig.
A memorial will be held at the Bayview Opera House, 4705 3rd St, San Francisco at 2pm on her birthday, July 23, 2016.
Carla requested donations be made to the Bayview Opera House, through their website, www.bvoh.org.

As a newcomer to Bernal Heights in February 2016, I only met Carla once, that spring and didn’t know what she and Anna we’re facing. They came across the street together one morning when the garage door was open and we were most likely still rearranging our belongings. She apologized for not having come over sooner as we made introductions. As I recall, it was a beautiful day and what I now know is that Carla took time that Saturday when she knew she had little time left. As I read about her life, I can see the reflection of her in that act far more clearly than I did that morning.

Thanks to God that I was able to be a friend and work with Carla. She was always there to help the people, but in the correct/safe way. She will be fondly remembered by the BFP of the SFFD. Our sincere condolences to Anna, your loss is shared by us who experienced both of your goodness. God bless you both.
