Carol Basbaum Obituary

BASBAUM, Carol Beth - Died April 2, 2005 at home after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Carol was born in 1946 and grew up in Peekskill, NY, with her parents Gertrude and Leo Garten. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College and received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. After studies at the University College London, she came to San Francisco, where she was appointed to the medical faculty at UCSF and is presently professor of anatomy and a member of the Cardiovascular Research Institute. Throughout her illness she not only maintained her remarkably productive research career into the causes of respiratory diseases (she was affectionately known by her colleagues throughout the world as the Queen of Mucus), but also became a respected cancer biologist. Carol is survived by her husband, Allan; their two children, Katherine and Jesse; her sister Toby and brother-in-law John Nady; and her many students and postdoctoral fellows who she mentored and loved. They were part of her extended family. Carol's lifelong love of animals continued in recent years when she took up horseback riding and thus instead of flowers, please consider a gift in her name to Heifer Intl., www.heifer.org. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 5th at 11:00 AM at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake Street in San Francisco. Interment will follow at Home of Peace Cemetery in Colma. A Memorial celebrating Carol's life will be held at UCSF at a later date. SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPEL - San Francisco

Last year, I was fortunate to sit next to Carol for 2 days at NIH study section. She made an otherwise painful process fun, with a lot of side banter. We will miss her.

To Allan, Katherine, Jesse and Toby - My 50 year friendship with Carol has sadly ended. She was my junior high and high school buddy. We shared so many memories, and I will never forget her. Many knew her as a respected scientist, but to me, she was just "Carol", friend extraordinare. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Katzie.
