Catherine Una McCarthy Bailey

Catherine Bailey Obituary

Catherine Una McCarthy Bailey (nee O'Doherty) June 29, 1919 - October 5, 2006 Born Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland, and Irish heritage proud. Preceded in death by son, John, 1944; husband, Denis Joseph McCarthy, 1970; and Francis Bailey, 1994. Survived by loving children, Vigil (Richard) Overstall, Joan (Simon) Budine, Catherine McCarthy, Denis Kevin McCarthy, Deirdre (David) McCarthy Deering; as well as 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. A devout catholic and fiercely independent, Una was always there for family, friends, anyone in need, giving of herself limitlessly, time, money - whatever it took. She had the greatest sense of humor, with always a story to tell, and unfortunately sometimes never forgetting a detail. That she survived all of her siblings and those of her spouses was long a mystery to her! She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends at home and abroad, and Roscoe too. Family and friends are invited to attend the Vigil Service Monday, October 9th at 7pm, at Saint Gabriel Church, 40 Ave., and Ulloa Sts., SF. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 11am at church. Burial will be private at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Vincent DePaul Society or your favorite charity.

My prayers are with you all at this time of loss. Your mother was a great one! While still a senior at Sacred Heart High & quite full of myself she took me in for a few days while blowing off steam instead sending me packing back home (around the corner). My family still gets a chuckle about the time I ran away from home all the way over to Kevin’s house. I’ll never forget her generosity & kindness.
Sincerely, David Shelhorn

Dear 'Auntie Una' I'm so sorry I didn't get to see you before you left us. I have so many memories of you from babysitting the twins to seeing you at'family events'. Believe it or not I can clearly remember seeing you for the first time when you came to San Francisco... pregnant with the twins with a heavy double breasted camel coat....looking very warm.
You always gave me good practical unemotional advice in my young years...greatly appreciated. As they say "you had a way about you"
You know I admired you so I'm not
'too' ashamed of writing these feelings. You were a good and steady friend to my mother. My Mom's memorial card would apply to you also..."I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness. " 2 Timothy 47-8
Goodbye good lady! Your niece Irene (OConnell) DeMaria

With my prayers of sympathy at the loss of your mother, a wonderful woman. Though it has been a very long time since I've seen any of you, especially Deirdre, I send you my love and support. (I have read the obituary online, as I am in Dublin on sabbatical.)

My deepest sympathy to the McCarthy family on the passing of Una, she was a lovely caring woman.
I often called to your home in the Marina with my father, Tommy McElligott, and she always had a special welcome.
Sincerly, Danny McElligott
