Charles "Chuck" Gherman, MD, passed away July 13, 2025 at 90 years of love and wisdom. He is fondly remembered as a spouse, father and grandfather, doctor, and friend.
His survivors include his wife, Beverly Gherman; his children, Gregory Gherman (Barbara Gherman former wife) and Cindy Gherman (Peter Whiting); his grandchildren, Zack Whiting (Sarah Eure), Matthew Gherman, Emma Whiting, and Benjamin Gherman; sister-in-law, Laura Gherman; and niece, Melissa Kaplan. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Richard Gherman.
Chuck was born in San Francisco in 1934. Some of his youth was spent near Corning where his father and mother owned a ranch. He and his family returned to San Francisco in 1946. He attended George Washington High School and then the University of California Berkeley. At Berkeley he met Beverly, the love of his life. They married in 1956. Chuck attended medical school at University of California San Francisco graduating in 1959. He did his internship at Denver General in Colorado. He then worked for the Public Health Service for several years on the east coast. He completed his residency and fellowship in Internal and Pulmonary Medicine at Stanford in 1964. Chuck and his family returned to San Francisco in the early sixties, and he began his pulmonary practice at Kaiser Permanente. He was one of the frontline doctors treating patients with AIDS. Chuck published several journal articles and case reports during his medical career. He retired in 2008 but continued to mentor doctors for years to come. He was an avid stamp collector and bridge player. Reading the NY Times, the comics and sports pages was a daily ritual.
