Charles Lebo Obituary

Charles Phillip Lebo, MD Born in San Francisco in 1921, Charles Phillip Lebo, son of Dan and Belle, husband of beloved Marjorie, brother of Mimi Greenwold, cousin of Jackie Werner, father of Henry, Susan, Cynthia and Charles Jr.; beloved grandfather of Sarah, Hanna, Max, Katherine, Peter, Lindsay and Loren, died on October 23rd. Graduate of Lowell High and the University of California and a member of the medical faculties of Stanford and UCSF, Charles was a highly respected Bay Area surgeon, and director of the Vestibular Lab at Pacific Medical Center. An expert in acoustic trauma, he attended rock concerts in the Sixties to conduct pioneering research on the damaging effects of loud music on hearing. In the early Seventies, he led a group of Bay Area physicians to China to open a hospital and train doctors in Western medical techniques. A well-read man with many interests and passions, Charles played piano, violin, and trumpet and was a founder of the S.F. Doctor's Symphony. He was conversant in multiple languages, a jogger, a world traveler, a gourmet cook and connoisseur of wine, a sports car enthusiast, an avid sailor and golfer. He was an uncommon man with a great sense of purpose. He will be truly missed by all those who knew him. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, November 13 at The Stanford Faculty Club, 439 Lagunita Drive, Stanford, CA. Friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to www.doctorswithoutborders.org would be appreciated.

I did not know Charles well, but on the few occasions that I had the pleasure of chatting with him, it was exactly that, a pleasure.

He will be missed, but there is comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on through his children, his relatives and his friends.

Dear Chuck, Betsy and Lebos All…

We want to express our sincere and deep sympathy for your family as you now must cope with the profound loss of Charles. These are sad times for so many of his kin and wide circle of friends that he happily collected and gave to in his sweet and noble life.

The cycles of life are usually known and predictable, but still can be mysterious and—happy or sad—we must cherish them. We all will remember Charles for those many special moments and times as well as in general for his always welcoming smile; his laugh and keen (and sometimes wicked!) sense of humor; his vocational skills as a remarkable and respected doctor in the community at large; and his great and many passions in life…our one forever… and now the journey continues…

Charles lived life exactly as he wanted to, always, we like to think. And now is the time for us all to celebrate, remember and heal...as he surely wants us to.

The world lost a truely gentle man. I thoroughly enjoyed our many golf and bridge games together and will miss his wonderful sense of humor as we struggled around 18 holes. Charles was the last real renaissance man I knew and knowing him brightened my life. My thoughts are with you Vi and his entire family.

Your father was a larger than life human being, a wonderful neighbor and friend and a superb doctor. In his younger days, he'd never fail to come running late at night when my dad and mom would call to report another ear infection at the White's home that needed ministrations - and still your mom and dad remained close friends to all of us! Always a great sailor, he was a frequent winner on the I C Folly where I'd watch the races from the Marina Greens. Hank, I loved your parents - they were a part of my childhood and will always be a part of my heart. You are truly fortunate to have grown up with two such wonderful people. They enriched the lives of everyone who knew them. Please give our best to your brother and sisters. Harriet (McCarthy), Robin (McKenzie), and Brooks White.
