Charlotte Karp Obituary

Charlotte Horton Karp
Jan 21, 1932-Sep 20, 2021
Charlotte Horton Karp, loving mother, grandmother, and friend of many passed away peacefully at 89 in San Francisco, CA. By her side were her children, Glenn Karp, Steven (Sheila) Karp, and Kimberly Karp. She was surrounded by love, and lucid and grateful to the end.
Charlotte was born in Houston, TX, later moving with her family to Columbus, TX. She was the daughter of Charles Kaapke Horton and Glenn Errol Harbert, and sister to Glenn Errol Horton Coffman. After losing her mother at a young age, she realized the importance of living her best life. A free spirit, Charlotte attended college at Sophie Newcomb (Tulane University) and the University of Texas. She then made the decision to be a part of the golden age of aviation. While a hostess for Continental Airlines in El Paso, she would meet and marry Robert Sheldon Karp, an officer in the USAF. They selected San Francisco to settle down and raise a family.
Charlotte was full of life and quick with a smile. She had a special way of making family, friends, and people feel better about themselves. She was famous for Texas expressions, "It's a real frog strangler," "Let me get some lipstick on, I don't want to scare the horses," and "Darlin' it's better to be kind, than right."
After raising her family, Charlotte started her own business importing art from Haiti. She was an avid reader, charter member of the Western Addition Library Book Club, a vibrant participant in Tuesday Seniors at Calvary Presbyterian, and was a talented water colorist learning the craft with the Golden Gate Artists Society. She loved her coffee and the San Francisco Giants.
She is also survived by her beautiful grandchildren, Kelsey Karp, Charlotte P. Karp, Davis Karp, Katherine Karp, Chloe Karp, her nephew Charles Coffman and niece Kelly Lynn Phillips. The world lost a beautiful soul, but heaven has gained an angel. Charlotte's wish. "May we meet again like a hummingbird; with joy and surprise!"
A memorial is scheduled for 11am on November 13 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore St., San Francisco. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Calvary Presbyterian or the SPCA.

The Karps were our neighbors in Evanston, Illinois. My mother hosted dinners every Sunday and the Karps were always special guests. Charlotte was most definitely one of a a kind; I don't know if I ever met anyone else as delightful. My heartfelt condolences to her children and grandchildren.
