Claire Sapiro Obituary

Claire F. Sapiro
Loving mother, partner, and friend, Claire Sapiro of Kenwood, California, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, just shy of her 103rd birthday. Born in New York City in 1922, Claire's golden curls earned her the nickname "Curly." She often attributed her positive attitude to sustaining her long and fulfilling life.
Claire's remarkable journey included meeting Eleanor Roosevelt as a child. After working for the war effort, she moved to SF with her mother where she later worked in advertising and managed several agencies. In addition, she was a docent at the wine museum in SF. She then guided tours to Napa vineyards, worked as a travel agent, and volunteered for many years with the Red Cross.
Claire was always a pioneer being ahead of her time. In the 1980s, she built a stunning redwood yurt, which was her sanctuary in Kenwood, Sonoma County, CA. There she also opened Clairelight Books, fostering a vibrant community for authors and artists.
Known for her incredible memory, Claire could recount the details of her life with precision. A passionate traveler and avid learner, her adventures enriched her extraordinary life and spirit.
Claire is survived by her beloved partner, Wendy Mountain; daughters, Linda Mossett and Lisa Sapiro; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Her beauty, charm, and indomitable spirit will forever be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

I´m sure I met Claire at her bookstore but my forever memories are of being in the same yoga class with Claire. I started out on a mat in the back of the studio and slowly moved toward the front. Then when I had my first knee replacement I moved toward a chair against the wall. That´s when I really began my friendship with Claire. We became yoga buddies on Mondays and then added coffee dates when Wendy would join us. I remember the muffin parties Pam would hold for octogenarian birthdays. Claire´s was always special. She always celebrated the whole month of January and often into February. That´s when friends got to take her out; January celebrations were filled with family. I remember my first visit to her yurt. It was for lavender picking. That sweet smell will always remind me of Claire.
