Coach McHugh Obituary

Coach James McHugh

Coach Jim McHugh – August 10. 1931 – April 17th, 2014. Our beloved Father was called home to Heaven on Holy Thursday. After a battle with Alzheimer's, Coach McHugh can rest in peace.

The youngest son of Irish immigrants, Jim was born in Oakland and raised in the neighborhoods surrounding Fremont High School.

Preceded in death by his parents Patrick and Bridget, siblings Jackie, Tom and Toddy, and Richard McHugh, Brother-in-law Dennis and beloved sister Patricia Lucey, our beautiful mother Frances, and our wonderful brother Gregory.

Survived by son Jim, wife Kathy, children Danielle, Cameron, and Markaela, by Gregory's children, Gregory and Emily McHugh, by daughter Caroline and children Hannah, Briana, and Devon Fields, and by son Andrew, wife Karen, and children Alyssa, Shaelyn, and Karlina.

Baby of the depression, our Father worked hard to provide us an education and a chance to succeed in life. He married his high school sweet heart Frances Cena, and they enjoyed 49 anniversaries together. Selfless, supportive, and loving, Jim will be missed dearly. His role in many of his players' lives continues to create victories in their own lives. He played a major role in Oakland's athletes from the 60's to the 90's; Oakland High, St. Elizabeth's, Laney, and College of Alameda. He created a gift which keeps on giving. We Love you Dad.

I'm so sorry to hear about Jim. I first remember him as the boys' varsity basketball coach at SEH when I was a student, then later as fellow parents at St. Lawrence O'Toole in Oakland which our children all attended, then later Bishop O'Dowd. He & Fran were a great couple!
