Sailor Dan and Ernie the attorney on the Bay

It was early 1966 when you and Lisa Kindred came strolling into the lobby of the Daniel Boone Hotel (Columbia, Mo), where I was working as the overnight desk clerk. We had our first talk that night, me 22, you 21, beginning a conversation that still continues despite your passing. Today, on my 80th birthday, I celebrate the positive difference you made in my life, and in the wide wide world. As Yeats put it: Think where man´s glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends. So long, old pal. I´ll be catching up with you soon.

Dan the sailor man. Dan and I sailed San Francisco Bay with our friend Ernie the Attorney. One day on our way out under the Golden Gate Bridge Dan was steering and we had a big current right on our nose. Under sail boat is going backwards. We looked at Dan our eyebrows making question marks and Dan said, " I have a plan." We got closer and closer to the south tower, "I have a plan" said Dan. Finally I cried, " Dan there is a sign on the tower! " - "what does it say?" He asked cooly. "It says if you can read this you are too close!!" Ernie started his sailboat´s engine and floored it. We moved away from the tower laughing and shouting "you´re too close!" Ernie and I still dont know what Dan´s plan was...but we know what the sign at the bottom of the south says.
We still laugh about that - it was a close call that we´ll never forget. Miss you Dan. There is one less star in my sky.

Dan was a life-long friend and mentor. He was a pioneer and innovator in his ideas and life lived. His generosity was immense. The world was better for having him in it and his presence and energy continues to be felt.
With love

Dan was one of the gentlest men I knew. Ah if we had more like him in the world. I am happy that I played a small part in helping unite him with his beloved partner Kerry. Oh Danny boy the pipes the pipes are playing....Love and miss you dear friend.
