David Rubsamen

David Rubsamen, M.D., LL.B California native David Rubsamen, 87, who held degrees in medicine and law from Stanford University, passed away March 20th at his Oakland home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in Pasadena, he was among the first physicians in the country to pursue a law degree, which he earned after practicing internal medicine. Upon receiving his law degree, he limited his practice to the medical aspects of litigation, and was often called upon to testify before state and federal legislative committees. In 1968, Dr. Rubsamen founded the Professional Liability Newsletter, a monthly publication focusing on current medical malpractice cases and the law. Additionally, he was a founder of the Doctors Company, the first doctor-owned medical malpractice carrier in the United States. Dr. Rubsamen published many articles in state and national journals and was the author of two books. David was loved by all who knew him for his generous and whimsical spirit, commitment to his profession, and devotion to friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Hackel; son Reid Rubsamen and his wife Amy; step-children Jamie Hackel Hyams, Steven Hackel and seven grandchildren.
