David Rubsamen Obituary

David Rubsamen, M.D., LL.B California native David Rubsamen, 87, who held degrees in medicine and law from Stanford University, passed away March 20th at his Oakland home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born in Pasadena, he was among the first physicians in the country to pursue a law degree, which he earned after practicing internal medicine. Upon receiving his law degree, he limited his practice to the medical aspects of litigation, and was often called upon to testify before state and federal legislative committees. In 1968, Dr. Rubsamen founded the Professional Liability Newsletter, a monthly publication focusing on current medical malpractice cases and the law. Additionally, he was a founder of the Doctors Company, the first doctor-owned medical malpractice carrier in the United States. Dr. Rubsamen published many articles in state and national journals and was the author of two books. David was loved by all who knew him for his generous and whimsical spirit, commitment to his profession, and devotion to friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Hackel; son Reid Rubsamen and his wife Amy; step-children Jamie Hackel Hyams, Steven Hackel and seven grandchildren. In Lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to: Sutter VNA & Hospice, 1900 Powell Street, #300, Emeryville, CA 94068

My deepest sympathy to the family. David influenced so many lives. I treasure the memories of working with him at the Adult Guidance center in San Francisco fifty plus years ago. He was a special friend.

Dear Dorothy, Reid, Amy and family,

David was a very important part of my life, especially in my formative years. He was a thoughtful, positive influence with a kind, generous word to say to me. I always marveled at how he could handle two careers in one, as a doctor and laywer, while I couldn't even get thru medical school. He was never motivated by money yet he did things for the common good, like that wonderful newsletter (with the help of Dorothy) that was so necessary to lawyers and doctors, including my own father. There aren't many (if any) like him any more and he and his kind will be sorely missed. But, my fond memories of David will remain as an inspiration to me as I continue through life
