My high school students and I depended on Wildwinds for six years as we identified Roman coins together, and I have spent many, many more happy hours beyond that roaming the site and learning about coins. There was, quite simply, no better place for that. What an amazing guy, to do so much for so many of us, just for the joy of it. Words can't express what a debt we owe him, or how much he'll be missed.

I recently learned of Dave's passing. I had e-mailed him numerous times concerning his Wildwinds website and coin in general. I had told Dave years ago that any picture I ever post on one of my sales on the internet was his for the using, if he wanted it. That still applies if the website is to remain in operation for the next proprietor. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family. "We never lose those we give to God"

If we are lucky, we may be allowed to stand upon the shoulders of the great. Dave was one of those giants upon whose shoulders we were briefly fortunate enough to have been allowed to elevate ourselves and stand for a moment. It will probably be years before the full significance of his contribution to ancient numismatics is fully understood in its importance and put into proper historical context. My most sincere wishes go to the families he leaves - both his own, and the greater family of numismatists whose lives were daily enlightened by his efforts.

Though we were thousands of miles away, on separate continents and had never met in person, my heart still sank immediately when I heard of this very sad news. As one of those thousands of ancient coin collectors who visit Dave's WildWinds site often, I didn't know Dave personally but only exchanged a few emails with him over the years. When I heard about his sudden death I was stunned.
We take so much for granted; we often don't properly appreciate things until it is too late. I don't think I ever got a chance to thank Dave for his amazing WildWinds archive, but I am glad that it will live on as a tribute to his generous spirit and numismatic knowledge.
My heart goes out to Dave's family and friends, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Surber family, Dave and I did not know each other well but we had some productive exchanges over the years regarding his website Wildwinds. Dave was always friendly and helpful and open to suggestions or corrections. He cared greatly about the website and understood what a great help it was to hobbyists at the entry level. Many books used in this hobby are rarer or more expensive than the coins they are about. Dave's work in building and editing Wildwinds was monumental and I am sure many are saddened with his unexpected passing.
