David Watson Obituary

David Watson
July 9, 2023
David Austin Watson was born in Sherman, Texas, in 1946. His father, Merritt, was a brakeman on the Frisco Railroad, and his mother, Clara, was a housewife. David was ambitious. He decided to attend college at the University of Texas, or "UT", and he went on to law school at UT as well. He then went to Washington, DC, where he was employed by the Securities and Exchange Commission and by the Department of Justice. His mission at both agencies was to catch the crooks.
David was subsequently assigned to San Francisco, where he met Paula in 1981 through a mutual friend. They hit it off immediately as they both had a pretty good sense of humor, and they married in 1982. Many friends attended the ceremony at the Penthouse at the Showcase.
They first lived in Noe Valley and subsequently moved to the Marina. They enjoyed traveling, going to Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Asia. David particularly enjoyed going on cruises on Windstar, a three-masted sailing ship.
David enjoyed parties he and Paula hosted, where he loved talking to people and regaling them with jokes. He also was an avid reader, reading only nonfiction-- histories and biographies.
What was impressive about him--along with his honesty and friendliness, was his belief that women were just as capable as men. When Paula had to work late at night on occasion or travel out of state to meet with clients, he never complained.
David was an honest, intelligent man, with a generous heart and a great sense of humor.
On March 20, 2023, David fell down the brick stairway of his house, and sustained a brain injury. He was rushed to the Chan-Zuckerberg General Hospital where he spent several weeks. He subsequently was treated at several rehabilitation facilities and hospitals in Kentfield and in Novato. Unfortunately, his injury was too severe, and he passed away on July 9, 2023. He will be sorely missed. Please direct any gifts in his memory to St. Anthony's Foundation, SF.
