Dean Morris Obituary

Dean Morris
12/11/1953 - 08/09/2024
Dean Russell Morris died peacefully on August 9, 2024, in Fairfield, California, after a long illness.
A native Californian, Dean was born in Los Angeles on December 11, 1953. He was the third of three children of Clarence Ellis Morris and Hazel Faye Logan. He grew up and attended public schools in Hawthorne, California. A gifted natural athlete and avid Little Leaguer, he played baseball in grade school, junior high, high school and college. Equally intense in academics, he earned a 4.0 GPA and graduated as valedictorian of the Hawthorne High School Class of 1972.
Heading to Stanford University on scholarship, he played university baseball for a season before deciding to focus exclusively on his academics. In 1976, he graduated from Stanford with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Before graduate school, Dean worked for the Veteran's Administration Hospitals in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California. This was the beginning of a professional association that he would maintain all through his career. During this period, he married educator Leslie Nan Richards, and had two children. The couple later divorced.
Graduate studies took him to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he received his Master's degree before entering the doctoral program in Public Health at the University of California at Los Angeles, earning his DPH in 1989.
He resumed his career as an administrator with the Department of Veterans Affairs and retired in 2016 after 32 years of service. He worked on a wide variety of VA health projects, including the opening of two outpatient clinics, conducting seismic retrofitting studies on VA facilities, and obtaining funding for such projects. He worked principally for the VA San Francisco Health Care System.
After he retired, he volunteered with the VA, demonstrating his lifetime commitment to public service.
Perhaps the most unexpected benefit of his VA career was meeting his wife, Jane Dutton Morris, a fellow VA employee. They married in Hawaii in 2001. Dean made his home with Jane overlooking a hill in the East Bay city of Vallejo, California. There, he relished designing and cultivating his garden, and adopting at Jane's behest a whole lineage of mischievous rescue cats, who eventually won him over with their wiles. He never tired of getting together with his brother to watch his favorite sports teams, the San Francisco Giants, the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers.
Dean is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jane; his sons David and Jacob, and Jacob's partner Henry; his brother Brian Morris and sister-in-law Mare Saarni; his sister Marilyn Chase and brother-in-law Randolph Chase; and an array of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
The family will observe a private memorial on September 29 on the San Francisco Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

Dean and I played baseball and played on a south bay all star team together. He was always a favorite person of mine. Smart humble and a kind soul. I just learned of his passing this morning thinking I ought to touch base with Dean. Sorry to hear the news.

As I write this I look upon a picture on my mantle in my man cave and see a team picture of the "Dodgers" with Dean standing next to his coach, my father,Clifford Burge. The background is the Middle League Field at Holly Glen Park. I played baseball with Dean in
our youth. He will be missed as those glorious days gone by. God Bless you Dean, and see you later good friend!

I first met Dean in 1st grade and we were in most of the same classrooms through 8th grade and I spent a lot of time at the Morris household; playing basketball and baseball. Dean was very smart, athletic, strong, and yet so fair minded and so very kind. He helped to make grade school tolerable for a shy sensitive kid like me. We went to different high schools and colleges/universities but would manage to stay in touch over the next 45+ years. Because of the covid era and my recent health challenges, I had had seen or spoken to him for about 5 years. I was very saddened to hear of his passing.
My condolences to Jane and the extended Morris family.

Miss you Dean, you and me got to know each other the day I moved from the UK and you got locked out of your house next door. You came in and watched the TV I had just connected up.We found we had a lot in common, same age, fathers in WW2, Two Kids ( young adults) , second marriages to slightly younger highly intelligent beautiful women. A love of gardening and our homes and the ability to help each other out as good neighbours do.
By the way where did you leave that tin of green paint you were going to lend me?
RIP my friend, my first friend in USA

Dean lived a 5 minute walk from my home in Hawthorne. We were not big friends, but were in many of the same classes for years. What a surprise to find him in the Medical District Office at West LA when i arrived there as an Assistant Planner! He was born for that job (I went on to Public Health) and excelled at it. Im so glad he was able to find love again and enjoy hos last years. The VA was good to both of us. PEACE.

So grieved to hear about Dean's passing. When we lived next to him in Los Angeles, he was my best friend and confidant. After I left UCLA to practice medicine for the next 30 years, I saw him less often but thought about him many times. We got together on a handful of occasions over the years, being privileged to be the witnesses (my wife Gail and I) at Jane and Dean's wedding in Kauai. He always had the fondest memories of Kauai, regaling us with his stories of sliding down waterfalls and what not when he visited there as a young man...
I'd like to remember Dean now as that fun loving, active dude hanging out in Kauai and having the time of his life !
I've known many people during my lifetime but VERY FEW with the deeply balanced human and loving nature of Dean Morris. A true "mensch". God Bless you Dean and my condolences/love shout outs to Jane, Leslie, David and Jacob
