Diana "Dinny" Winsor Chase Dakin passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024, surrounded by her husband, sons and grandchildren who came in from around the country to pay their final respects.
Born in Berkeley August 19, 1937 to Frederick Loring Winsor and Marion Cheek Winsor, Dinny grew up
in Piedmont and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1955. She went on to University of California at
Berkeley and in 1959 graduated with a degree in History and an Elementary Teaching Credential. At Cal she was a member of Alpha Phi, Prytanean, Torch and Shield and for three years the Rally Committee.
For 37 years she was an active Docent at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and many more as a Supporting Docent. She was a past Chairman of the Docent Council, founder and co-chairman of the Docent Fund and a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Asian Art. Over the years, she was a member of the Board of Managers of the NSCDA-CA, the Junior League of Oakland, the first woman President of the League to Save Lake Tahoe and many other non-profit organizations.
Dinny's professional career included teaching elementary school, and administrative work at City Hall for a Member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She may have been most satisfied with the impact she had on so many young people as Assistant Director of Admissions at University High School in San Francisco for nine years.
She was a member of the Town and Country Club in San Francisco for almost 60 years, the Lagunitas Club of Ross for 40 years, and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America.
Dinny loved to play bridge, playing three or four days a week to the very end. Other pastimes included hiking and backpacking, mostly done in and around her homes at Lake Tahoe and Downieville, CA, and Sisters, Oregon. She also was a patron of the arts, regularly attending the Opera and Ballet. She loved reading and being in book clubs, spending time with friends, and traveling all over the world, including 20 trips to Asia in her lifetime.
She is survived by her husband John Howard Dakin and the late Martin Starkweather Chase, and children Stuart Winsor McAllister (Jocelyn) of Westlake Village CA and John Baldwin McAllister (Julie) of Portland, OR and stepchildren Nick Chase (Carol) of Windsor, CA, Tim Chase (Suzanne) of Morrum, Sweden and Alicia Dakin of Carmichael, CA, Karla Dakin of Louisville, CO, Cary Dakin of Novato, CA, and Jack Dakin (Michelle) of Puerto Rico; her sister, Julia Winsor Medland of Toronto Canada; 14 grandchildren: Jasmine (Tyler), Sophie (Kyron), Sarah Johanna, Nicholas (Siobhan), Walter McAllister, Tyler, Melissa (Kevin), Sarah (Andreas), Hanna Chase, Dakin Platt, Elizabeth Ewing, Cora, Evelyn and Jake Dakin, and great granddaughters Isla McAllister and Aubrey Peterson.
