Diane Meagher Obituary

Diane Marie Meagher

DIANE MARIE MEAGHER was born in Oakland, CA on December 21, 1950 and died October 25, 2016.
She was born to Donald & Constance Meagher and is survived by her siblings Ronald Meagher & Joanne (Meagher) Dalley. Diane graduated from Oakland High School class of 1968, then attended college and received her Bachelor's degree from the University of the Pacific. It was there that her lifelong love of education was born. Aside from her teaching credentials, Diane learned to play guitar during the tumult of the '60's and enjoyed singing popular folk music.
She moved to San Francisco and spent 35 years at Fairmount Elementary School as a bi-lingual elementary school teacher, serving underprivileged Hispanic school children as their third grade English teacher. Nothing made her happier than students who remembered her years later for her teaching.
During a recession, when funding for school music programs was suspended, Diane volunteered her time as an instructor in "Little Kids Rock", a community funded after-school program which introduced the acoustic guitar to hundreds of kids. This program inspired many young people including recording artist Kai Lyons who recently performed at the San Jose Jazz Festival.
Diane also was an active member of the Teachers Retirement Association and headed the Teachers Union as UBC member at Fairmount Elementary. She retired from SFUSD in 2008 ending her stellar career of 35 years.
Diane sang and performed in the choir as an active member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in San Francisco. She enjoyed traveling to the wine country and exploring the great outdoors. Diane cherished many close relationships with her friends and colleagues. She enjoyed cooking, dining out, and long walks in the park with her beloved dogs which she treated as family.
Diane fought a valiant fight the past year against cancer and will be sorely missed by family and friends. Donations in her memory are welcome and may be directed to the SF ASPCA or Guide Dogs for the Blind

I was a college classmate of Diane's. We were in a bilingual college nested within the University of the Pacific, so our college was like a separate little family. Diane was a nice person and I was happy to hear what she had done with her life. It was completely in line with the goals of our college and was idealistic, as I remember Diane was.

My Mom Donna was a Para with Diane and I was a student and knew Diane. She did so much for the Fairmount community when we were there in the 1980s. She had a heart of gold for her students and staff.

Rest In Peace and in Love, Diane. What I'll always remember is that you always took time to talk to me. You will be sorely missed.

Diane
I remember first meeting her and thinking she is such a delightful person. I then realized she was also a most dedicated teacher. When I asked other teachers about her and thought about their answers, It came to me. She smiles, she likes kids, she is relentless when it comes to putting her best effort forward.

Teaching is what she did but it did not define her as a person.

So blessed to have worked with her and been touched.

Diane always paused to chat on her regular walks. Sometimes she will be walking her dog or a neighbor's dog. We enjoyed a walk together recently. She asked if I had been to this neighborhood sundial park. That was the first time in this park for me, even though I lived nearby for many years. I will treasure this memory.

This summer, she was very happy with her front yard - the smart meters were installed, the street repaved, her walkway landscaped and her lilies were blooming. She gave me cuttings as her flowers were spilling abundantly over the flower beds.

Dear Diane, I will think of you often - especially when I snack on spicy hummus, sugar snap peas and pita chips.

Good-bye my friend. The memories are still so vivid. I recall being at your house during the Holidays, listening records on your record player. We even cut school together our senior year and hung out in the Haight, selling Berkeley Barbs on the street corners. Those were the days, my friend.

We were kids together and had Some Fun. I am glad that we got to see one another and have a good conversation with our old friend Rel Rogers, at our last reunion. Our friend Teryl preceded you but I imagine you two making music together on the Other Side. Fly free, my friend and Happy Graduation. Love you.
