A few days ago, I was on a Zoom session where we were remembering mentors. I thought of Don. I was at SFGH in the Fam Med residency 1974-1977, so I got to learn from his role modeling a lot. I am honored to also consider that Don was a good friend as well as a professional role model. I remember him so very well and so very fondly. I miss him. But I remember all he stood for, which makes me motivated to fulfill tikkun olam, repairing the world.

I'm writing for my Mom Mercy Fitzgerald who worked for Don for many years. We were shock when I called the house number had been disconnected. Don was so good to my Mom and our family. Mom Lordy Don when my Dad needed her. Then they sold our house after 30+ years living there and in 2011 we move to Palm Springs California. My Mom heard from Don in December 2016. My condolences to the whole Family. . Mercy and Lynn Fitzgerald

I met Don back in the mid '70's when a group of doctors were talking about a new concept at the time- a wholistic health center. As a beginning nursing student I was welcomed into the group. Don remained a friend for all these years even though there were stretches of time that we weren't in contact. He helped me through a crisis with my ex husband when he was at SF General in the '80's and other wise words throughout the years. We reconnected in 2013 and I was able to introduce him to some of my friends and my fiancee Tom.
He was such a dear, wonderful man. I will miss him.

Diana and I would like to add our happy memories to this condolence book, because that is what we have - happy memories of Don. We lived in San Francisco from 1974-77, while I was training in family medicine at SFGH, so Don impacted my professional life early. Through Marty and Marlene Cohen, we got to know and love Don personally. Diana and I saw Don most recently at the SFGH FM 40th anniversary events, which was a wonderful opportunity to re-connect and reminisce. We will miss Don.
Don, aka Papa Don, thank you for sharing all of you...your stories, your insight, your encouragement, your Ben and Jerry's and your love.

My sincere condolences to the Fink Family. I had known Dr. Fink for over 25 years. He was a friend and mentor to me. I enjoyed our in depth conversations on a multitude of topics including: politics, music, theater, economics and pretty much anything topical. I looked forward to talking with Dr. Don and will miss him dearly.

Met Don in Washington DC in 1969 in a professional capacity with our mutual concern about children. Much happened. I held Don in great respect for all of the work and contributions that he accomplished. His parents were caring people.his father was a doctor in Chicago.his sister became a good friend as did the rest of The family After a long distance relationship I moved to San Francisco and we married. I was friendly with his ex-wife Katie. I arranged for bar mitzvahs for his wonderful sons David and Daniel And guitar and drum lessons and much more-/they created a band called sibling rivalry. my dear daughter Amy and his always amazing daughter Nancy became close as step sisters. We shared a lot over the next 10 years. It is sad for me to know that Don has passed I wish everyone only positive memories of a very wonderful person

Don was my boss for my first "real job" out of graduate school. He hired me to run a federally funded health promotion program in 1983 at SFGH. I hold him in my memory as a kind and intelligent person. He would often remind me that I should go home ... "the work will still be there in the morning."
