Donald MacKay Obituary

Donald Noyes MacKay, MD Donald Noyes MacKay, MD died peacefully on April 28th at his home in Palo Alto, CA, surrounded by his family. As a physician and clinical professor of medicine at Stanford Medical Center and chief of infectious diseases at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Donald dedicated his life to caring for others and teaching young doctors how to diagnose and treat patients. Born and raised on a small island off the coast of Maine, he was an Eagle Scout, played catcher on the baseball team, center on the basketball team, helped his father run the local newspaper, and developed a life long love of ice cream at the soda fountain in his mother's drug store. Donald graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his MD from Cornell University, was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society, and completed his internship and residency at New York Hospital, where he became chief resident physician in medicine. He served two years on active duty in the US Army as chief of medicine in Vicenza, Italy, was elected Governor of New Hampshire for the American College of Physicians, and was awarded for his outstanding teaching at Dartmouth Department of Medicine. Donald looked forward to returning to his home town in Stonington, ME, each summer, where he cherished his time with his family, had a chance to catch up with life long friends, and spent many happy hours sailing on the Penobscot Bay. Proud of his New England upbringing and his clan Mackay ancestry, he had a great appreciation for Maine humor and the sound of bag pipes playing. He was a man of dignity, humility and kindness. Donald is survived by his wife Sandy; sister, Nancy; three daughters, Nancy, Susan and Sandra; and eight grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Donald MacKay will take place on July 7th in Stonington, ME. Arrangements by Roller Hapgood & Tinney, Palo Alto, CA.
