Dorothy Greene Obituary

Dorothy Roth Greene
09/27/1933 - 12/06/2025
A longtime San Mateo resident, Dorothy Roth Greene passed away on December 6, 2025 of natural causes. Dorothy was born to Morris and Elizabeth Roth on September 27, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. She and her identical twin sister Rosalyn grew up in the golden age of Brooklyn where young girls could ride the subways for a nickel and cheer for Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
While a student at Adelphi College, she met future husband Marshall Greene, M.D. through her sister. In 1954, she graduated with a degree in social work. Shortly thereafter, she married and moved to Syracuse, NY where she worked in social work and supported the couple while her husband was in medical school. Back living in New York City, she gave birth to son Joel in 1956. Not long afterward, the young family set off for Topeka, Kansas for her husband's training. There she gave birth to son Mark in 1958. Another son, David, came in 1960.
In the Fall of 1960, the family drove in their blue Rambler to the San Francisco Bay Area where Dorothy lived the rest of her life. The family settled in San Mateo, California in 1962. Fourth and final son Ken was born that year. Dorothy was a busy homemaker raising the four boys and two beagles. She was active in the community as a Den Mother, PTA president, congregant at Peninsula Temple Beth-El, state board member of the League of Women Voters, and political action volunteer. Dorothy loved reading, playing bridge and completing the NY Times crossword puzzle. And she had a passion for the arts, regularly attending the SF Opera, SF Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, the Lamplighters, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, ACT and Berkeley Rep.
As the boys grew up and eventually left home, Dorothy returned to work and was the Executive Assistant and Fundraiser Coordinator for many years at the Family Service Agency of San Mateo County. She was also an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Women's American ORT and Peninsula Symphony. A proud Eichler homeowner for 63 years; she was the Editor of the San Mateo Highlands Lowdown for over ten years.
When she [at last] became a grandma, she loved playing with and nurturing Noah and Jacqueline Greene.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, her grandchildren and her daughters-in-law, Terry Sigal (Mark) and Beatrice Burke, M.D. (David). Also survived by her sister Rosalyn Treger, niece Flora Treger, M.D. and nephews Jessie and Dan Treger. She was predeceased by brother-in-law Albert Treger, M.D., niece Marian Treger and her former husband.
The family wishes to express their immense appreciation to Cadence Millbrae Memory Care for providing loving and supportive care to our Mom during the last several years. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Family Service Agency of San Mateo County (peninsulafamilyservice.org).
