Douglas Eric Woods
January 27, 1951 - May 19, 2021
Doug Woods passed away on May 19, 2021 following a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer. Doug was born to Eric and Wilma Woods on January 27, 1951 in Cornwall, Ontario. The family later settled in Menlo Park, California where Doug spent his childhood and adolescent years with his sister Daphne and brother Dan. Doug graduated from Menlo Atherton High School and attended Menlo College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in History.
After graduating from UCLA, Doug returned to the Bay Area and began a long career in the construction industry. He spent many years at Rudolph and Sletten, working his way up the ranks and developing his expertise as a builder. In July of 1990, Doug founded DPR Construction with his partners, Peter Nosler and Ron Davidowski. In the years that followed, Doug devoted himself to DPR and helped to grow the company to be one of the most respected general contractors in the US. At the time of his passing, Doug was no longer involved in the daily operations of the company, but was still active in guiding DPR into a new era of leadership.
In his free time Doug pursued various interests, including watching professional and collegiate football (in particular, his beloved San Francisco 49ers and UCLA Bruins), cooking, gardening and collecting fine wines, as well as hiking, skiing and other fitness activities.
But above all, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, be it at home by the pool, in favorite spots like Hawaii or Utah, or in more far-flung locations such as Africa, Australia and Japan.
Doug is survived by his partner Berina Hawes, his children, Andrew and Kimberly (Winthrop) Woods, Eric and Ziggy (Coolahan) Woods, Tiffany and Michael Jorgensen, Jessica Woods, Reed Woods, Katie Woods and Owen Woods, as well as his four grandchildren, Colin Woods, Moby Woods, Emily Jorgensen and Julia Jorgensen.
The family plans to hold a private memorial in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Berina Hawes and Douglas Woods Cancer Research Fund. Information on donating is available at
