Dougan Chan Obituary

Dougan Chan

1954 - 2015

Dougan Chan, age 61, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at home in San Francisco, CA. Dougan was the 2nd of 4 children born to Dick and Yuet Ngor Chan in San Francisco, CA. He was raised in the Richmond District of San Francisco, attended public schools in the area and graduated with a degree in Medical Microbiology at San Francisco State.
Dougan supported the family laundry business and later served the City and County of San Francisco for 24 years as a Deputy Sheriff. Affectionately known as "Doogie," "Doogie Howser," or "MacGyver," he enjoyed tinkering with tools and doing his own construction projects in his spare time. Dougan also volunteered with Kimochi Home and with Self-Help for the Elderly Foundation, where he delivered meals to the elderly every Thanksgiving. In addition, he enjoyed vacationing at Lake Tahoe each year.
Dougan is survived by his wife Marie and two children Denise and Daniel, his mother, siblings, nephews, nieces, and grandnephews. He is and always will be remembered as a kind, supportive, loving and good-humored person dedicated to his family and the well-being of others. He led by example, always in service to others and earned the respect of all who knew him. He will be remembered by family, friends, and families he served so selflessly.
Funeral services and burial will be held on December 16th, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Sunset View Cemetery & Mortuary at 101 Colusa Ave, El Cerrito, CA 94530.
The Chan family would like to extend our gratitude to all the well-wishers who love Dougan the way we do. Donations may be made in Dougan's name to Hanna Boys Center, Self-Help for the Elderly, or Kimochi Home.

Doogie was indeed kind and thoughtful. I would see him 2 or 3 times a week, and I was almost always rushing by. He always stopped me and took a moment to say something kind, funny, something that made my day better. I will not forget him!!!

I worked with Doogie side by side for about 5 years. Doogie was one of the most selfless people I have ever known, he was thoughtful and kind. He was generous with his time and knowledge. He had the biggest heart. Doogie loved his wife Marie and his family more than anything else. Doogie & I shared a working kinship, he was like a brother to me. I admired and respected him. I will miss his laughter, his jokes and pranks. I am proud to have known him and honored to call him my friend.

To have known Dougie for the past 24 years was an absolute pleasure. As everyone had mentioned, if you were down and not feeling up to being yourself, Dougie knew how to make you smile and make you feel it was just another day at 850.

Dougie, I will truly miss our small talks we had over the years.

Every day coming to court I passed by his department and just seeing his smile was a great way to start the day. He always had some funny observation to share and I frequently saw him helping others navigate the copy machine. He always was so cheerful and such an incredible fixtur at the hall. He is and will be missed so very much. A huge loss for all who new him. My hear goes out to his family. It was a magnificent gift an honor to have him in my life

I first met Doogie back in 2002 when he left Civil and came to HOJ courts. I had just had my son and would be exhausted almost every morning after dealing with my son and getting zero sleep. Needless to say , I'd be grumpy most of the time but Doogie had a way of making me laugh by just being himself and talking trash to me, calling me lazy etc, etc. Ever since then, no matter how much time would pass since seeing each other, we'd greet each other with an insult of some sort but it was always in fun and it was ALWAYS good to see him. Doogie was a great man and I'll miss him and his smile. Rest in peace my brother!!!

I would see Doogie throughout the day at work. He was always smiling and enjoying his day. I would call him my "scruffie" because of his beard. He will be missed. He is now an angel looking down upon us all. RIP my Scruffie. See you on the other side...

I worked with Doogie at the courthouse, he was a great guy and will be missed by many people within the court. His time came way too soon. He would always ask for my advice when it came to computers. It was an honor to know him, God Bless and stay strong!
