12/18/1946 - 07/25/2013
Ed Mahoney left us, suddenly and too soon, on July 25, 2013. He was 66, at home in Pacifica. His wife of 32 years, Linda Cairo Mahoney, had been with him until shortly before he died. He leaves behind sons Josh Mahoney (Ellen), Dan Mahoney (Dianna Cavagnaro), and Thomas Graves (Mariel Gonsalves); granddaughter Sophia Rose Mahoney (born 7/12/13); brother John and sister-in-law Tita Mahoney and their large family; and numerous other relatives, in-laws, friends and associates. Those who died before him include, sadly, his grandson Tommy Graves, Jr. (Tomer).
Ed was proud of being a son of old Butchertown (now called Bayview). He was born in San Francisco 12/18/46, part of the first wave of Baby Boomers. His parents (father John and mother Lorraine) qualified him for membership in the huge Mahoney and Mooney clans at a time when family was everything. He grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins and remained in close and joyous contact with them his entire life-likewise the Cairo family, which he joined in midlife. He graduated from local schools, starting with Our Lady of Perpetual Help, top of the hill in Daly City. He was student body president at Archbishop Riordan High School, Class of 1965. He went on to get his bachelor's degree at USF. He always cherished his student years, which yielded many, many lifelong friendships.
After retiring from a long and successful career in the Safeway organization, Ed got the opportunity to return to his old schools and pursue a second career in school development. He took it enthusiastically, and threw himself into alumni relations, fundraising, community relations, etc., first for several years at Riordan and then for the last ten years at OLPH, the grammar school he had attended as a boy. At the time of his death, he was serving as Development Director of OLPH, hard at work on several projects.
All those who knew Ed will tell you that he was as sweet and big-hearted a man as ever walked the earth.
Observances will take place at Cypress Lawn Funeral Home, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma (650) 755-0580. There will be a viewing Monday evening, August 5, from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. On Tuesday, August 6, there will be a viewing from 4:00 to 9:00 pm, with a vigil service at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to the OLPH scholarship fund that Ed established in memory of his parents: Mahoney Family Scholarship Fund, OLPH Development, 80 Wellington Ave., Daly City, CA 94014.

To Linda and the Mahoney family. I send you my deepest condolences with thoughts and prayers for you all. I went to O.L.P.H. with Ed Mahoney and I was in his graduating class of 1961. Ed was always the glue that kept us together after we graduated. He was always involved with our Class Reunions. I have nothing but wonderful, loving memories of Ed. He was the kindest, most compassionate, most fun loving, up beat and positive person I knew. You will be missed Ed and I know you hold a high rank in Heaven too. Margie Muela Eriksson

Ed's warmth, kindness, wisdom and wit can't come close to describing this fine man and truly valued friend...Irish to the core of his all-loving heart, and all-embracing in his friendship with the hundreds of lives he touched so deeply.

My condolences to the Mahoney Family. I met Ed as a bag boy/clerk at safeway in Parkmerced in the 60's. My father trained him and Jerry Nolan. My father always said I should watch them and learn.Ed always had nice things to say about my father and the early days at Safeway. Ed spoke to me in 1968/1969 about attending Riordan. His comments led me to pick Riordan. He was a good man and someone I always looked up to.

Dear Linda and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most challenging of times. Ed was the greatest of guys. I was a fellow member of the OLPH Class of 1961, and through Ed's efforts, so many of us remain close in spirit even now, 52 years after our graduation. Ed was an amazing, cheerful, generous person. He will be missed greatly, but his spirit will live on in the lives of those he touched.
Love,

to eds wonderful family, ed was the nicest guy of the class of 1965, he always had a smile and a kind word for all of his classmates. he was our leader in school, with the club 65, and with the alumni assc.. the class of 1965 has lost one of its finest men. Mother Theresa said when she won the noble prize for peace "not everyone can do great things, but everyone can do little things with great love." She was speaking about lot of wonderful people, and she was speaking about Ed Mahoney. It was an honor and a priviledge to be his class mate and friend,I will miss him tremendously. May you rest in peace Crusader....

We witnessed Ed & linda's union, as Linda's Aunt & Uncle our perspective incorporated an understanding of the change Ed's love & devotion brought to Linda. His patience, his understanding & his humanism nurtured Linda & I as Uncle Jim, received a sense of joy for Linda. I believe he brought forth the humility in all of us because of his kindness. We loved him & because of him, we will care more for one another. Thank you Linda for bringing Ed into our lives & we Love you.

Dear Linda and family, I send my deepest regrets to you all. Eddie was always such a great spark of energy and light for all. When I think of summer in the Russian River Eddie always comes to mind. Touch football with the gang in the river and then the dance in Rio Nido at night. Aldean, Freddie, Mike, the Hooks, the Robinsons and Eddie, always laughing and having fun. The world will miss his big spirit of love and energy. He will always be in my prayers. God bless you with peace Linda. I will never forget your kindness to me when I, as well as you, were in great pain. love, Joanne

Dearest John, Linda, Josh, Dan, Kaki and all the Mahoneys, Morans and those who loved Ed,
Ed was a prince of a man -- a gentleman with a bright wit and an easy smile for everyone. He embodied Irish Catholic sensibilities -- generosity of spirit and big-hearted embrace of life. He left us too soon. We will miss his joie de vivre, but will try to carry out his mission at OLPH by contributing to the Mahoney Family Scholarship and by reaching out beyond our small worlds to include everyone. Lots of love, Cousin Kathleen

Dear Linda, John and the Mahoney
Clan,
I am very sorry for the loss of Eddie. He was a wonderful cousin and person and I am grateful for being able to see him most recently at Mike Moran's St. Patrick's Day celebration. He always made an effort to gather together the Moran, Mooney and Mahoney families at Virginia's in either Saratoga or Santa Cruz during the summer.
God bless Eddie and you and let her hold us in the palm of her hand.
Love,
