Edward Mevi Obituary
Edward Mevi, Esq.
06/30/1939 - 11/30/2023
Edward (Ed) Mevi, a longtime resident of San Francisco, passed away on November 30, 2023 with his family by his side. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and Papa, an accomplished attorney, an avid sportsman and an independent thinker.
Edward was born in Los Banos, California to Harriet Guaglianone and John Mevi, an Italian immigrant. He maintained a sense of pride and belonging to both California's Central Valley and his Italian heritage throughout his life. He attended Los Banos High School, where he played basketball and served as the student body secretary. After school, he worked as an assistant land surveyor, fostering a lifelong interest in land and water use. He attended UCLA for two years and then graduated with honors from San Francisco State University in 1966 with a degree in Economics.
In 1963, Edward married his sweetheart, Patricia Toscano, whom he met while delivering milk to her family's home in Los Banos. Edward and Patricia moved to San Francisco in 1966, where they lived together for the next 57 years and built their family.
Edward started his professional career as a Certified Public Accountant. He then pursued a law degree, graduating from UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) in 1972. Over the next 30 years, he worked as an attorney in the Bay Area. Often in the courtroom, words used to describe his performance included "genius", "never losing a case," and "generous," as he always gave credit when credit was due.
Edward enjoyed off the beaten path travel - with his wife, he travelled through Europe and North Africa for a year, living and camping in their VW van. He then outfitted an old VW bug into a dune buggy and drove it 1,000 miles on a newly completed road to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He adventured with his family to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Costa Rica, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Kona Coast well before the tourism booms.
Edward also enjoyed good food, becoming a farmer's market patron long before it was standard practice, as well as an excellent chef. He made friends easily regardless of position or lifestyle, and had lifelong friends from all walks of life.
Edward was a patient and loving grandfather, who could often be found holding, teaching and playing with his three grandchildren. A testament to his kindness, Edward's two beloved hunting dogs, Cayley and Beau, never left his side during their lifetimes.
Edward is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia, his children Ashley and Ethan, his grandchildren Lucia, Luke and Rylan, his brother John, and his sisters Beverly and Juliet. A celebration of life was held near Los Banos on January 6, 2024.
Since his passing a year ago, we carry his lessons of kindness, intellectual curiosity, adventure, good food and love of family with us everyday. He is dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
