Eli Horton Obituary

Eli Hamilton Horton
December 26, 2018 - March 29, 2021
Eli Hamilton Horton had a contagious laugh, an impish spirit, and a joyous life. He spent every day of his 27 months smiling and the latter half of his time playing with his twin sister, imitating his big brother, chasing tunnels and loving mangos. The memory of Eli's little voice calling "Look at me!" [yelled as he launched himself off the couch] will warm the hearts of those that loved him. He was fearless, active and a light for anyone he encountered. His last moments on earth embodied his life—playing, splashing and indulging in an ounce of mischief. He is deeply missed by so many: parents Noah and Molly Horton, brother Zachary, twin sister Leah, grandparents Bonnie Loeb and David Horton, great grandmother Charlotte Schlitz as well as his community of extended family and friends, who are all so grateful to have had Eli as a gift for the last 2 years. Eli joins his grandmother, Catha Horton, and grandfather, Hamilton Loeb, with their butterfly wings. Those who miss him can visit his forthcoming bench at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park—just at the bottom of Huntington Falls—where his eternal spark will continue to enjoy the sounds of children laughing, watching paddle boats and secretly feeding ducks (not that his family condones duck feeding… but EE was not constrained by rules).

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children 1-4 in the U.S.; may Eli's death be a vehicle for change (because Eli loved vehicles.) His family has established the Eli Hamilton Horton Memorial Endowment https://www.ymcasf.org/eli-hamilton-horton-memorial through the SF YMCA to provide equitable access for water safety swim lessons to SFUSD preschool and early elementary students. If you would like to honor Eli's memory please consider donating to his memorial fund.

Reading this notice is heartbreaking ! I don’t know you but my heart aches for your untimely and unfair loss of your sweet boy. He was so beautiful and what a smile he had! You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

To Eli's family, I have taught swim lessons to children for over 22 years. I love children, I love the water, and I love to swim and this part time job just came naturally as I raised my three sons. Today, I read Eli's obituary and my heart is heavy. I cannot begin to know your pain but your loss and your desire to make a difference is admirable. Water safety is essential for children and I feel better today knowing I, too, am making a difference. Hugs to your family.

We are so sad to see your story. What a light. What a great face.

Our grandson, Calvin Kezar Main, lives downstairs from us in Berkeley. He was born in San Francisco on December 26, 2018, the same day as your Eli. Life is so tenuous. May Eli's twin and his brother and you-all live long and productive lives.

Eli will be missed so much. We're sad we didn't get to see him as much this year due to COVID, but will miss his big smiles. Our sincere condolences to you. We will definitely visit Eli's bench and maybe accidentally drop some bread for the ducks. Sending love your way.

May Eli soar high alongside the angels. May every butterfly circling above your heads, every laughter bellowed from a child’s mouth, and every daring and courageous act of a little person bring you sweet memories and lasting smiles.

This was an incredibly beautiful tribute, to an incredibly beautiful baby boy. I’ve always believed that my love ones come to me in the form of butterflies. Next time my grandmother comes to say hello to me, I will be sure to request that she sends my love to Eli as well.

Hugs to you all,
Laticia

Molly, this is a beautiful memorial to your precious son, Eli. Words are not adequate to convey the feelings I have had after meeting you this morning at the bookstore. When I said you were taking my heart with you, I meant it, and I have you and your family tucked next to mine. I hope to see you again when you return to visit Healdsburg, and would love to meet your family. I am deeply touched by this journey that you unfortunately must walk, and I'll stand alongside you and share this information in Eli's memory.

I didn't even know Eli. He sure was a cutie. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Just a sweet little innocent guy taken away way too soon. May your memories of Eli be magical. May he Rest In Peace and never be forgotten. He is now on the other side of the rainbow resting peacefully. God bless you Eli and your family
