Elizabeth Erlin Obituary

Elizabeth Folger Erlin Born in San Francisco, June 21, 1912, Elizabeth (Betty) Erlin, the first child of Grace Haley and Roy S. Folger, passed away July 23, 2006 at the Palo Alto Commons in Palo Alto, at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Frank Erlin Jr, who died in 1997; by her brother Roy A. Folger, and by her sister Grace M. Haid. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Peter Folger Erlin and Susana of South Portland, Maine, and Michael William Erlin and Claire of La Honda. She also leaves her sister, Mary Folger Barrett and her husband Larry of Palm Desert, her childhood friend Mary Louise Moreton Canfield of Palo Alto; five grandchildren; Shawn Meisl and her husband Chris of Jackson, WY, Matt Erlin and his wife Ebba Segerberg of St. Louis, MO, Tim Erlin and his wife Belinda of Minneapolis, MN, Michael Erlin Jr and his wife Lee of Sydney, Australia, and Christopher Erlin and his wife Cheri of San Rafael, as well as six great- grandchildren, Stuart and Mitchell Smith of Wyoming, Noah and Sofia Erlin of St. Louis and Conner and Clancy Erlin of Sydney, as well as many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Betty was raised in Palo Alto and started teaching piano as a teenager. She graduated from Castilleja School in 1931. In 1934 she met and married Frank Erlin Jr. In 1938 they build their home on Byron St. where they lived together for the rest of their lives. The next year they adopted twin sons, Peter and Michael. Betty later resumed teaching piano and music to students in Palo Alto, and did so for the next 40 years. She was president of the Walter Hays PTA. She had a wonderful ability to reach out to children especially with music. She was a volunteer at C.A.R. and an original docent in the "Music for Minors" program. She taught music appreciation to 4th and 5th graders at Walter Hays School, and was honored with a special concert at Walter Hays that gathered many of her students from years past. She and Frank loved to travel; they enjoyed their house at Aptos, but mostly they loved each other. A Memorial Service is planned for later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Corpus Christi Monastery, Menlo Park or Pathways Hospice of Sunnyvale.

I knew I had the coolest "ant" on the planet when she took me to see The Modern Jazz Quartet at the "Mem. Odd." when I was in high school. I rememder her taking a bunch of us to see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band when I was much younger. How cool is that?!!!

Custards

Dancing

Two pianos

Boogie Woogie

The twinkle in her eye .

All wonderful memories of a wonderful women.

I love you Ant.

A white plate of lightly salted beefsteak tomato slices (what a clever lunch)

Gazing out the window to a backyard apricot tree on a street named for a wild poet

Looking from Velma’s smiling eyes over to my godmother’s smiling face

Playing with Bill Ding in the basement, rustling about in the mysterious brat house

Learning boogie-woogie at her elbow after I tired of my scales and minuets

Bicycling on the wooden runways of the Palo Alto marshlands under the great blue

That curled-down lip with a glance askance but her eyes with a telltale grin

And then that same expression when she really meant it

Both of us holding our hands over our ears at a Stan Kenton concert

Trying to imagine sitting next to her at a Liberace show in Vegas

Dancing with her in my arms in the Venetian Room while Ella Fitzgerald sang to us

Parking my truck on Byron St. and walking to the door feeling like I was 10 again

Trying to make her stay longer at the end of the party

I am still eating and loving custard. I still play the boggie woggie on the piano. Which is all I have retained form years of piano lessions with Aunt Betty. One of the hand scales Aunt Betty taught me and I sill am working on is EGBDF (Every Good Boy Does Fine) I almost have that down, must keep practicing. Soon I will recieve a smilly face and a gold star on my hand and a cup of custard.

Thats it now, I'm going so you can leave now too.

The hard toffee candies that she pulled out of her purse, deftly, furtively sneaking a piece into your hand....The warm, honey colored homemade custards that came out of her pink kitchen...."The Sheik of Araby" - between the sheets without a shirt....Dashing into the ocean at Rio Del Mar no matter the temperature...backstrokes with vigor...Two pianos, so many songs and dances with her brother, sisters, and nephews at every wedding, and family celebration....direct to the heart of it...she could always find the way to bring you in and get to the heart of how you were...what you were doing... like a friend..and then I remember the afternoon sitting in her kitchen when I was so embolden by my older age of 20 something that I called her "Betty" and she shot right back..."AUNT Betty" - letting me know the importance of honor and respect. Her ability to laugh, have a great time, make fun of herself and be plain silly...A deeply soulful, rock'n, jiv'n,woman with so much boogie woogie and the biggest deapest heart. Love you so Aunt Betty.

Dearest Aunt Betty -

Anyone who had the great pleasure of meeting and knowing you, will never ever forget you.

Thank you Auntie for all the warm smiles, for all the laughs, for all the dance moves and for all the beautiful piano music. You were a centerpiece of joy and Heaven is surely a lot happier right now....

Love,

Fun Memories on the beach with you in the ocean and Uncle Frank flying overhead. Beach hats on your bedroom wall, the color pink, custards in the oven, 2 piano concerts, the first to get up and dance on my wedding day. Thank you, Godmother!
