Ernest J. "Ernie" Young

Ernest Young Obituary

Ernest "Ernie" J. Young Ernie died on September 2, 2007 after a short illness. He epitomized the American dream, growing up in a small steel town in Ohio during the Depression, but after WWII eventually coming to California where he became president of one of the world's largest credit card companies and hobnobbed with movie stars and European aristocrats. Born in 1922 in Campbell, OH, son of immigrants, his father a "beat cop," he went to Ohio University and served in World War II as an officer in the 78th Infantry Division. He was in the Battle for the Hertgen Forest and was seriously wounded in Kesternich in some of the most brutal fighting in Western Europe that was essential for securing the American flank during the Battle of the Bulge. Years later he was in France on business, rented a car and drove along the route he had taken in the war through Belgium and France and then to Kesternich. He visited the tavern in which he had his company headquarters on the edge of town, the road where his jeep was hit by mortar fire and finished his interrupted journey across Kesternich and through the Ruhr. Even years later, he could not tell the story without tears for his fallen comrades. After returning home from the war and recuperating, he took graduate classes at Ohio State and then began working for United Way, then know as the Community Chest, in various cities across the United States. After serving as head of the United Way of California, he moved to Marin and joined the Bank of America in 1966 and quickly rose to prominence at the bank, at various times serving as president of BankAmericard, the bank's innovative credit card subsidiary that grew into Visa, and BankAmerica Travelers Cheques. He traveled around the world constantly, negotiating and preserving relationships in the international banking community and always looking for interesting marketing opportunities. He had the bank sponsor the "Its A Small World" ride in Disneyland and he and Walt Disney opened the ride together. He mingled with royalty in Europe, international bankers around the world and the staff in the mail room with equal facility. He served as president of the Downtown Association of San Francisco for several years and helped drive successfully the construction of a new Convention Center in downtown San Francisco. In 1982, he retired from the bank and returned to an earlier passion, United Way, running United Way of the Desert in Palm Springs, CA, in the fall and winter and traveling the rest of the year. He finally retired from United Way in 1997. Ernie lead a remarkable life and his impact was not only on the big projects which bore his touch, but on his warm and caring interaction with others. He was friendly and gregarious and happily talked to everyone and anyone. Where most senior business executives had their telephone calls screened, Ernie always answered his own phone. Ernie's interest in others made him many lasting friends around the world and he will be sorely missed. Ernie is survived by his wife, Marylou of Cathedral City, CA; daughter, Sherri Young Coats of Portola Valley, CA; granddaughters, Devin of New York City and Allyn of San Francisco; son, Craig Young; stepson, Kenneth Payne of Hartford, CT; stepdaughter, Sandra Teel of Redlands, CA; numerous step-grandchildren; his sister Flo Testa of Campbell, OH, and nieces and nephews. Ernie requested that no services be held. His ashes will be scattered in Hawaii. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor to VNA Hospice, c/o United Way of the Desert, PO Box 1990, Palm Springs, CA 92263. .

I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed to this guest book for all their kind sentiments and support. These are very hard times and this all helps us. Ernie was a wonderful father-in-law and friend and a special grandfather to our children. A marvelous person, he dreamed big dreams and then he carried them out, a classic American success story. He had a big heart and the world is a less warm and friendly place with his passing.

Mary Lou, I will miss the interesting talks with my favorite brother. Far but only a phone call away. We solved all the world's problems and always had a good laugh. I will miss him dearly. Love, Flo

Marylou,
I treasure our last visit with Ernie at dealership. He was always a delight to engage in a business conversation. Through all those years of United Way connection he never revealed his WW2 experience.
A bit of history lost by another member of the "Greatest Generation".
We all feel a sense of loss at his
passing. Our hearfelt condolences to you and the family.God Bless.

Dear Mary Lou

There is a big void in our Valley, the Kraft Nabisco Dinah Shore and in my heart.
I met Ernie back in the late 1970s. It was a privilege to work with him to promote the United Way in the early years and an annual delight to meet up with you and Ernie at various Kraft Nabisco functions, including the annual dinners honoring the volunteer chairmen. Ernie was priceless in his many roles. What touches me the most is Ernie's down-to-earth approach to people. He had enjoyed success at the highest levels of corporate America, yet, he was approachable, philosophical and funny. No phony baloney for him. He had life in perspective and that made him a relaxed and happy man. He had a personal connection with everyone he met and shared some little plot with most, I suspect. His little joke with me was to always wish me total independence financially so I would never have to seriously compromise myself. He really was a solid self-taught psychologist to zero in on my need for independence over a mansion or a fancy car. He did that with many people he met which is why we will miss him so much. How many people who have attained his success (in marriage too, I might add) take such an interest in the sefl-actualiztion of others. That is why he was a great boss at B of A and a beloved tournament chairman as well. No one else will ever ask me if I have achieved my goals in the very funny way Ernie did. He stayed grounded in his beginnings in that small Ohio steel town and kept those around him grounded as well. I think he just signed St. Peter up for a new Platinum Visa Card. Heaven's never had such excellent credit.

Dear Mary Lou, Sherri and Family, there are no words that describe my appreciation and sadness. Mr. Young was a boss, a friend, a mentor. I wrote his name in my heart, and forever it will stay! I know he is in a better place, pain-free, but I wish he was still able to talk to me when I call with a greeting or a question. I will miss you EJ!

Ernie hired me at BofA in 1966, and for 13 years, we shared a magical worldwide adventure. He was the "Master" of relationships and earned the respect and friendship of financial leaders throughout the world. He often spoke of his love for his children and Mary Lou. His departure is so difficult, but the fond memories we have of Ernie will live forever in our hearts.
