Eugene Chaput Obituary

Eugene Chaput
11/02/2024
A native San Franciscan and city guy at heart; an old bon vivant and true raconteur; a 72-year; 3rd gen. member of the Olympic Club and member La Ligue Henri IV; an ad man who excelled in his 40+ years at Y&R and Grey Advertising, winning multiple Clio Awards; a Who's Who in America. Founder of Montgomery Motorcycle Club, sportsman, softball and rugger, and creator of wonderful campaigns and events. Great storyteller and larger than life! A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Always there, always present. Countless important life lessons and pure loving support, with room for one's own decisions. No complaints, only glorious memories! A brilliant writer, he has put his pen down. He died blessedly in his sleep. He had fallen the previous day. Please be careful, dear old friends!
His generosity and fun was shared by family, friends and acquaintances – truly one of a kind. Fun and funny, with a sharp and relentless sense of humor. The quickest of wit produced a skilled, thread weaver and punster and post informer. Crazy and ever-wild prankster and hilarious jokester. Wherever he's going, the fun is about to begin. He loved old, deep south blues, classic cars and British motorcycles. His French family took many travels, outings and picnics, one to Portola Valley. As a 5 year old, he vowed to live there. Done! He made it for 52 years. He brought his wife, Sue, on a white horse to " God's Country," where he raised his family. He volunteered for the Town and coached soccer and baseball for his 3 sons for over 12 years. He hiked Windy Hill with his dogs, served as a great neighbor, gathered with wonderful friends he made and enjoyed every minute in a glorious place.
He had the best daughters-in-law on the planet. Survived by Blaire and Mike; their sons, Will, George, Barrett Chaput; Kathy and John Chaput; Kathleen and Tom, and their children, Alexis and Harrison Chaput; extended families. He was THE best uncle in the world and had dozens of cousins. We are, all of us, bereft and will miss him beyond imagination. Ride that sky, Gene-o! "The sun's gonna shine on my back door someday. " Godspeed, Safehome.

Gene Chaput. A life so well lived, never taking, always giving. We who remain behind should each take a slice of Gene's life legacy and make it a part of our own to keep his spirit alive and our own self-worth a bit better. I've reconnected with him fairly recently after being a softball team-mate many moons ago. It was as if we had been on the field together just yesterday. To say he'll be missed is the understatement for today - and forever. Ed Kessler

Wonderful memories of shared Easter Bunny activities and learning that the night before was too early...the critters got
most of `em! Well all miss Clean Gene - truly one on a kind.

Jenny and Susan Thomas were fortunate to have an egg throwing contest from our cars with Gene on a bright and sunny day - it was a deliciousness mess no one missed and we all thought we´d won - well played with love

Chaput Family,

Next May's Olympic Club Fifty Year + Dinner has lost a bright light. Your dad was a though competitor every year in the Strength and Fitnesss Competition Downtown A couple of years ago he appreciated the fitness upgrades at Lakeside and transitioned to working out there. It was a shock to me to see his picture on The List of Olympians Passed. Hoping to see you all on Thrusday. Best, Ed Reidy

The most loyal of friends, the most stalwart of neighbors. ("Greater love hath no man than he who will come and unplug your plumbing on a Sunday night.") Also a storyteller beyond compare and a gifted mischief.
