Fay V. Hungerford 89, of Concord, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March19, 2016 in Walnut Creek. Fay was born May 18, 1926 in San Francisco, California the daughter of the late Gustav and Calipso Varetakis. She was a graduate of Commerce High School, and received her Associates degree from SF City College, and she also received her draftsman certification. Fay held numerous positions with the State of California over her 18yrs with the State, those included Public Health, Cal Trans, State Compensation and lastly as Executive Secretary to the Chief Actuary of the State Dept. of Insurance.
Fay was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church as well as a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Contra Costa Council Navy League and in 1996 she was elected Navy Leaguer of the Year. She enjoyed doing volunteer work with various church and senior citizen activities.
Fay had a beautiful smile for all that she met, that will be greatly missed. She and Dan loved to travel and had been to every continent except Antarctica, including one trip around the world by plane and ship She loved to entertain and there was always plenty of food at the gatherings.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Daniel; nephew Gus Varetakis, great niece Lisa (Patrick) O'Donoghue and their children Cora Faye and Maggie; and nephew Nicholas Varetakis of Nashville, TN.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11:30AM in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 1955 Kirker Pass Rd. Concord. The family suggest memorial contributions in Fay's name be made to the St. Demetrios building fund in care of the church.
