Florence O'Malley Obituary

Florence Margaret O'Malley
December 15, 1939 - April 18, 2022
Florence Margaret O'Malley passed away peacefully on April 18, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Ruth & Edward, and her brother, Eddie. Florence was a kind and generous spirit who we will greatly miss.
Florence was born on December 15, 1939, in San Francisco, California, to Edward & Ruth Kelley O'Malley joining her older brother Eddie. Florence lived her whole life in San Francisco where she graduated from St. Cecilia's Grammar School and Mercy High School. Florence continued her education and received her Bachelor of Arts at Lone Mountain. She next earned her Master of Arts from Stanford University much to her cousin Jim's disdain. The Cal and Stanford feud was a great source of joy for Florence and her cousins. And finally, she finished her Post Graduate at the University of San Francisco.
Florence was a devoted teacher, counselor, and dean in the San Francisco Unified School District. She was loved and respected by students and faculty at James Denman Junior High School, Horace Mann Junior High School, George Washington High School, Balboa High School, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Florence devoted countless hours of her time mentoring her students and created meaningful relationships throughout her career. Florence worked to secure scholarships for her students including the University of California Incentive Awards and Summer Search while at Lincoln. She remained active in education long after her retirement by contributing her expertise to numerous scholarship funds.
Florence was a proud Irish Catholic who always put her family and friends first. She will be missed wholeheartedly by her cousins, the Murphys and Kelleys, as well as countless friends she kept throughout her lifetime. Florence was truly a gift to all who knew her. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Frank Charlton for taking excellent care of Florence and her brother Eddie. Also we want to give a very special thank you to Claire Treacy for her caring presence with Florence in the last few months who surely enjoyed her stories from Ireland.
Florence was truly a driving force, and we will miss her forever.
Services will be held on Thursday April 28, 2022, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2555 17th Ave., San Francisco, California. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.

i was sorry to hear about Ms. O'Malley's passing. I had tried to contact her over the last year, but was told of how ill she was and that she did not want visitors. I believe that we were third cousins; our great grandfathers, James and Thomas O'Malley were brothers. I have always tried to keep in touch with family and have prepared a vast family tree. I wanted to collaborate information I had gather with her. I would appreciate it, if anyone knows family information about Florence's life; I would like to add to the family tree and share it with anyone who might be interested. You can contact me at 400 Upper Terrace, #206, San Francisco, CA 94117. Thank you and I pray that Florence rests in peace. Edward O'Malley Buckley

We were blessed to live across the street from Florence for the last 18 yrs. For the past year, I would bring her trash cans in for her in the morning, as she found it difficult to get them back up her driveway. She was always so positive, even in the face of her cancer. She was a wonderful neighbor, and it's hard to imagine that she's gone. Our sincere condolences to her family and to all whose lives were touched in such a positive way by dear Florence.

In my capacity as the SFPD School car I had the pleasure of meeting Florence. She was the Dean of Girls and she was a huge assest to Lincoln HS. He was compassionate but fair with the students she dealt with. Her sense of humor was infectious and it was my true pleasure to work with her and to call her my friend. She will be missed. RIP Florence.
