Francis Coghlan Obituary

Francis "Frank" Coghlan On January 6, 2007 surrounded by family as always Frank was the only child of Theodora and Frank Coghlan. Frank leaves Carmel, his wife of over 57 years, whom he adored. His seven children: Edward (Dianne) Coghlan, Kathleen (James) Toomey, Mary (Channing) Rudd, Sally (Steven) McDonald, Ellen (Peter) DeGolia, Joan (Vince) Fausone and Patrick (Julie) Coghlan, will miss him terribly. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Kelly (James) Sheridan, Casey, Kevin, Mary Clare and Tootsa Coghlan; Colleen, William, Matthew and Bridget Toomey; Clare and Patrick Rudd; Edward, Timothy and Maggie McDonald; Peter Jr., Leigh and Jeffrey DeGolia; Vinny and Jack Fausone; and Emma Coghlan; and the great-grandfather of Sydney, Jaymee and Kathryn Sheridan. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of joy to Frank. Frank was a native and true San Franciscan. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1941 and began his college career at Notre Dame University. His education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco. Frank married Carmel Casey in 1949 and started to raise their family. He owned the Frank Coghlan Co. for many years which eventually merged to create the firm of Maroevich, O'Shea and Coghlan. Frank was an avid swimmer and especially loved swimming in San Francisco Bay and Lake Tahoe. Frank held the world record for his 1978 solo swim 13 miles across Lake Tahoe. His seven children called him "Double Dip Frank" after his swims across New York Harbor Verazzano Narrows and across San Francisco's Golden Gate on the same day. He started the Trans-Tahoe Relay Race in 1977 as a competition between the Olympic Club and South End Rowing Club as he was always active in both clubs. That small race grew into an annual event and is now an international swimming competition with dozens of relay teams. His fellow South Enders named a beach in his honor many years ago and that club still holds the "Coghlan Beach" swim annually. Frank was also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Friends are invited to visit Wednesday, 6:00pm followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00pm at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Street (and Fulton St.), San Francisco. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated, Thursday, 10:00am at St. Ignatius Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations in Frank's memory can be made to Lattice Educational Services 3273 Airway Dr., Ste A, Santa Rosa, California 95402 or to CCS/Medical Therapy Unit, 1595 Quintara Street, San Francisco, California 94116 for a summer Art-Tech Camp for physically disabled children, or to the charity of your choice.

Dear Carmel, Ellen and all,

The moment is just after the Mass this morning at St. Ignatius church. The eulogies are fond memories now as are the march of all those wonderful kids from their seats in the pews. You must have had some great times together that those kids will never forget. Last night while meeting them and shaking each hand, I reminded Rog that we should have had a few more. What in God's name was I thinking all those years ago.

I know how much you'll miss him. We were married in 1953 and it seems like it was last Saturday afternoon.

Fondly,

Diane Martinez (a Rosebud's mother)

Mary & Katie - My condolenses to you and your family on the lose of your dad and of course a great man. I still remember the time I tried to stay with him, swimming in Lake Tahoe. He only had me by 25 years and still kicked my butt. He'll be drinking a cold one in heaven with my da and they'll both be setting the world straight. Our collective prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Carms and wonderful kids,
Frank will be missed by so many! He was such a fun fellow, living life to the hilt. He was engaging in endurance sports before ESPN existed. For me, Frank was an inspiration. He encouraged me with my swimming, even invited me along on some early morning swims from the pier. (We had quite a thing going for a couple of summers:) His love for the natural beauty of Tahoe and the serenity of swimming in the cold water is something I hold dear.

I'm sorry for the sadness that goes along with your mourning, but the mark he's left is grand.

May your memories be vivid.
Love,
Judy McDonald

To all my Coghlan Cousins,

My heart aches when I think of Uncle Frank's passing.
I can recall the times when I would run into his South End buddies. I always felt special joking with them because I was Frank Coghlan's niece.
There will always be a place in my heart for him.

Dear Carmel and all of the 7 C's, How sad I was to hear of Frank's passing to the high heavens to join the party...He was such a warm, charming, and wonderful man. I always remember the many times he would be swimming to Meeks Bay with Mary,Sally and/or Ellen rowing from Chambers and we would marvel at his strength... none of us ever made the swim..."May the roads rise up to meet him and may the wind be always at his back"...take strength in his laughter and in his love of life...With Love Always, Phil &Peggy(Mullins)Dodds

I will miss Frank. He always had a great smile on his face as he was going for a swim at the SERC. He was truely an inspiration to anyone who swims in the Bay. He was an old school San Francisco native, a rare breed today, and a good friend. I will miss him, but his presence will forever be felt within the walls of the Southend.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I will also remember hearing stories of your dad walking across snow in Tahoe to swim on St. Patricks day. What a tropper!!!!!!

Dear Ellen,

I was saddened today, to hear the news of your dad’s passing. Let me express my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Ellen, I know losing your dad has left you with an intense ache, as you face these numbing days of grief.

As I write, I smile with precious memories of our growing up together, and the love and security I always felt when I was around your dad. His larger than life spirit, guidance, and strong sense of integrity shines in you and your family, and will live on proudly.

We share being raised, by the best role-models a daughter could hope for. My heart and tears are with you, as is my love and friendship always. Please share my affectionate respects to your whole family from our family.

Love, Kelly
