Frank Olson
07/19/1932 - 04/10/2024
Frank Albert Olson. 25 years leading the Hertz Corporation, husband, father, grandfather, devout Catholic & lifelong golfer.
Frank Albert Olson, 91, of Palm Beach, FL, passed away on April 9, 2024. He was born on July 19, 1932, in San Francisco, CA.
Frank Olson is survived by his wife Sarah, children Kim, Blake, and Christopher Olson, their spouses Dennis Arsenault, Mari Olson, and Jody Sommerhauser, and his seven grandchildren Daniel Arsenault, Noel Arsenault, Julian Arsenault, Tessa Arsenault, Ray Olson, Emery Olson and Ryan Olson.
Mr. Olson's quick wit, brilliance in business, charm and drive, and the support of his loving wife Sarah, saw Mr. Olson rise from being raised by his struggling single Mother Edith in San Francisco, to the heights of corporate America.
Frank Olson served as Chairman and CEO of his beloved Hertz Corporation which, through his leadership, expanded to become the global leader in Rent-a-Car. Mr. Olson also served as CEO of United Airlines in the '80s, successfully defending the company against a hostile takeover bid. He proudly served on the Boards of Directors of various prominent companies and institutions including Becton Dickenson, Franklin Templeton, Hess Corporation and United Airlines.
Mr. Olson served in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, CA. as a reservist in his mid 20s.
A devout Catholic, Mr. Olson was inducted into the Knights of Malta and was a supporter of many important charities, including Save the Children, the Boy Scouts of America and various Catholic charities.
An avid golfer, Mr. Olson was a member of prestigious golf clubs including Pine Valley, Cyprus Point, Seminole, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club and many others. He had five holes in one. He played in the Hawaiian Open Pro-Am as well as the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in multiple years.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Olson at a date to be announced.
Rest in peace, Frank. Your legacy and contributions will always be remembered.

I have many cherished memories of the family, having met back in 1975, through Blake, when they lived in Ridgewood, and I, Upper Saddle River. I remember golf always being on the t.v. and how much Mr. Olson adored his wife. It brings tears to my eyes. Those days spent with them were some of the happiest of my life. I work in Palm Beach and had no idea they were right here all these years. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Its always a sad and nostalgic time to read of an old friend who has passed away. From the early Burlingame days, I am Cliff and Dorothy Semmler's daughter, Sarah. Mom (94) and Dad (98) are still in their same home in the Burlingame hills and now more then ever reminisce about the early days of making friends and raising their children in Burlingame. I know Frank and Sarah were people my parents enjoyed meeting and socializing with in those days and look back at that time with fond memories. I myself, have memories of my parents instilling in me a good work ethic; no matter how small, mundane or unpleasant some tasks may be, if you're willing to start at the bottom and work your way up you can relate to the company as a whole and appreciate what it takes to work hard to achieve your goals. They always cited Frank as the treasured example of this success. My parents pass on their heartfelt condolences to the family and may God bless you and keep you in this time of mourning Frank's passing.
