Fred died at home, May 12, 2024, with his partner Sarah by his side, just a few months shy of his ninety-ninth birthday. He is survived by his partner Sarah Blocki, his daughters Laura Weekes and Janvrin Weekes Demler, his granddaughter Elizabeth Weekes Demler, his son-in-law James Demler, his sister Olivia Weekes Greene, and his brother Eric Swanson.
Fred was born in Pasadena, California, but when he was two, his father moved the family to France where they stayed until Fred was sent back on a steamship by himself at the age of 10. He went to boarding school in Lenox, Massachusetts, and then to Landon School in Maryland.
In 1943, Fred joined the Navy in Philadelphia. He became an engineer on a naval hospital ship, the U.S.S. Rescue, A.H., that sailed the Pacific.
Though Fred had been at Johns Hopkins University for two years before the war, after the war ended, Fred went to the University of Pennsylvania on the G.I. Bill. He graduated in 1948 with a B.S.E.E. He returned to higher education at Catholic University of America and received an M.E.E. in 1959.
Fred met Betty Hood in San Francisco, they married in 1960 and raised their two girls, Janvrin and Laura, in Berkeley.
As an electrical engineer, Fred ran his own small company, Pacific Photometric. He ran for Berkeley City Council twice and won the second time. He ran for mayor in 1990, but after a run-off election and a court case about absentee ballots, he lost by 77 votes.
After a divorce in 1991, Fred moved to Seattle. There he met Sarah Blocki, a math teacher who would soon get her law degree.
Freds spent his retirement years reading and writing books, painting, and compiling a Weekes family genealogy.
We are forever richer having known him.
