Frederick Schmidt Obituary

Frederick James Schmidt

Nov. 13, 1944 - Jan. 15, 2018

Today, January 15, 2018, is a day of loss for all who loved Frederick James Schmidt, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Fred passed away today after a long and heroic battle with ALS. Fred served honorably in the U.S. Army in Viet Nam during the Viet Nam war. He was a person who loved fiercely, lighting up the room when he entered, and always bringing and joy to those he served and loved. He was unique and he loved life and lived it to the fullest. His greatest love and joy and source of deep pride were his sons, Zack and Adam and his loving wife Touria.
Fred was born in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love and he embraced that spirit of love all his life. He spent almost his entire adult life in the San Francisco Bay area, most of that time in Berkeley, and served the Bay Area in the painting and renovation business he created. Fred was a devout Catholic and had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary. Fred was well known as a man whose generosity was enjoyed by all who knew him. Fred is survived by his wife Touria, his sons Zack and Adam, his brothers John and Jim Schmidt, his sister Mary Pratt Miller, and an extensive number of friends who he loved and cherished and who loved him. A memorial for Fred will be held at St. Dominic's Church, 2390 Bush Street, San Francisco, CA 94115 on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 2:30 in the afternoon. It will be followed by a reception in the parish Sienna Room. Condolence cards can be sent to the family's home or can be brought to the funeral reception.

Touria, Zack, and Adam,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I just found out. Fred was a special person - I'll always remember him as a dad who clearly loved his family so much and would do anything for them. I am a better person for having known him.

I met Fred while our sons were attending the same school and in Boy Scouts. Fond memories of a Boy Scout outing traversing San Francisco's China town culminating in Fred purchasing Chinese food for our entire table and wouldn't accept contributions from those sitting with him. His smile and laughter was infectious . May he Rest In Peace,
