Frederick Sherwood Obituary

Frederick Sherwood
06/22/1943 - 04/23/2024
Born and raised in San Francisco, Fred Sherwood was the epitome of an old-timer from the City. His family relished in the stories he would tell of running the streets with his many cousins near Blake Street where his grandfather, James Henderson, had built a family home with his own hands. He sold newspapers on the street corner as a boy, had his picture in the paper when he was rescued from a capsized boat, and carved his name in the sidewalk near his childhood home on 46th Avenue in the Sunset. His memory is etched all over this beautiful city and in our hearts forever. Born on June 22, 1943, he was the son of Robert and Patricia Sherwood; and brother to Robert, who predeceased him in 2023. With his former wife, Robbie Sherwood of Hayward, he shares three children, Patrick, Kelly, and Christy. He took pride in his role as grandfather to his growing brood of eight grandchildren, Caitlin, Erin, Matthew, Nick, Jared, Ben, Ace, and Rey. As a veteran of the Navy, he continued to work for the government as part of Sup Ship and traveled the world working on naval ships. On one of his journeys to Scotland, he set out to buy a kilt with a Sherwood tartan only to find that the very English surname did not have one. Ultimately, he purchased a Henderson tartan in honor of his grandfather that he wore proudly, including walking his two daughters down the aisle in it. With a mother named Patricia, born on St. Patrick's Day, he and his family always celebrated their Irish heritage as well. His corned beef and cabbage meals were a staple of the holiday-whether it be for family and friends at his home in the Sunset District or for those on hospice at Laguna Honda-it was always a hit. Fred lived a full and colorful life. The next time you are in your favorite pub, raise a pint in his honor and picture his Irish eyes smiling.
Family and friends are invited to visit Wednesday, May 1, after 5:30 p.m., and attend the Rosary at 6 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be on Thursday, May 2, at 11 a.m. A Committal Service will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

RIP Fred. I´ve never forgotten the happiest day in my life when we got married and, the saddest day, when (within a year) it all fell apart.

I have so many memories of Fred. The earliest is when we went to nursery school together. Tom, Robert, Fred, and myself. We would get in trouble and the teacher told our mothers, That I was the ring leader. The boys would do what ever i told them to do. We had a lot of fun growing up togeather.
Rest in peace, Fred, love you forever.

Thinking of the Sherwood Family in this time of loss. What a difference Fred and Robbie's children, Patrick, Kelly, and Christy, make to those who know them in their professional work and personal, community activities. In private intentions (Holy Family) in this time of loss ~
