Frederick Whitridge Obituary

Frederick W. Whitridge

November 24, 1922 - September 25, 2018

After a long and happy life, Fred Whitridge died peacefully Tuesday at the age of 95 at his residence at the San Francisco Towers. Born in New York City, a great grandson of both the British poet Matthew Arnold and the railroad pioneer Charles Crocker, he attended Groton School and Yale University. Following army service during World War II, he moved to the west coast to begin a long career with Crown Zellerbach and Zellerbach Paper Company until his retirement as Executive Vice President and member of the board. He walked downtown to work everyday for over 20 years from his home in Pacific heights.

He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Betty, and survived by 4 sons, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Fred served as Chairman of the Board of SPUR in the 1970s and at various times on the Boards of St. Luke's Church, St. Luke's Hospital, Groton School, Orcas Island Community Foundation, San Juan Preservation Trust and the Mary A. Crocker trust.

A memorial service will be held Friday October 26, at 3pm at the Grace Chapel in Grace Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his honor could be made to the San Juan Preservation Trust, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.

A legion of islanders send condolences to the Whitridge family as we remember, with great fondness, our friend, neighbor, colleague and mentor. It was one of my greatest honors to work at Fred's side as we fought, with our island community, to protect the the best of the San Juan Islands. Places like Turtleback, Crow Valley, and (of course) Arcady Farm will stand forever as testaments to his life and convictions. There will never be another one like him...
