G. Bellis Obituary

G. Gordon Bellis Sr. Died unexpectedly January 24th after spending his final evening at the Bohemian Club. Gordon was born in Shanghai where his parents were stationed in the United States Navy. He was the only child of Navy Captain Louis J. Bellis and Marjorie Roth Bellis. After the Japanese invaded Shanghai in 1937, Gordon and his mother were evacuated in a rear-guard action on the last American boat to escape, while his Father was on a mission. His childhood was spent in Manhattan and in Cuba when his Father was later stationed at Guantanamo Bay. He was educated at St. Paul's School and graduated from Yale University in 1957 where he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity. Following Yale, he spent his most formidable years in the Marine Corps in which he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1963, he married Cathy Cartan of San Francisco. The couple moved from New York to San Francisco in 1967 where they raised their three children and numerous golden retrievers. Gordon worked in finance throughout his business career.

Gordon often declared that he was fortunate to have led a wonderful life.
He was a bon vivant, and a witty, gregarious Renaissance man. Gordon enjoyed fine wine, good friends, books, music, dominos and travel. An avid outdoorsman, Gordon loved skiing, sailing and hunting.

As a passionate gourmet, he was active in the San Francisco Wine & Food Society, the First Growth Group, and the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. Gordon was a member of the Pacific-Union Club, the Bohemian Club and the Burlingame Club.

Gordon was predeceased by his wife Cathy and his parents. He is survived by his confidant and close friend of many years, Josephine Malti, as well as his children: Gordon (Lori), Catherine (Ned) and Alexandra (Justin) and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved dog Electra. At his request, there will be no memorial service.
