Gail Berman Obituary

Gail A. Berman
August 17, 1948 - September 4, 2021
Gail Ann Berman (née Wolfe) passed away September 4th, 2021 in San Francisco, at the home she shared with her husband Howard for 44 Years. Gail was born August 17th, 1948, in Denver, Colorado, and was described as "the Golden Child, but one who deserved the title" by her four younger brothers. Known as Wonder Woman to her Friends, Husband, and Kids thanks to her driven nature (and a great Halloween costume), Gail led a remarkable life of adventure and achievement. Graduating from Arapaho High School's first graduating Class in 1966, where she was head cheerleader and Valedictorian, she then graduated early from Colorado State University in 1969 with a Mathematics degree in lieu of Computer Science, which had not yet been made into an academic discipline. The only woman in that year's Graduating Class with a math degree, she came out to San Francisco at the age of 21 and made it her home, while working as a Mainframe Programmer and Systems Architect for over 40 years, retiring as a Vice President of Blackrock Investments.

When not pioneering in the work world, Gail was an avid adventurer with her husband Howard. She explored more than 60 countries, living for long periods in England, France, and the South Pacific, often with small children in tow. From boat trips through the wilds of Borneo, to safaris in Zimbabwe and Tanzania, to tours of the Pacific Northwest's miniature golf courses, Gail went everywhere and did everything, and somehow found time for scrapbooking, documenting her life and trips in beautiful albums, taking care of her incredible garden, and sewing amazing costumes for her kids during Halloween and for their school's theater department. An avid skier, she was successful at anything she set her mind to, from cooking to foreign languages to her lifelong love of ballet and theater.

Everyone speaks of her radiant smile, her tremendous warmth, and what an amazing hostess she was, welcoming so many friends from all over the world to her San Francisco home and personally showing off the city she loved. Her loss leaves a great void in our lives that will never be filled, and when the time is right, we will gather together in Golden Gate Park, where she spent so many beautiful (or fog-shrouded) days, to celebrate her life and share our memories of this wonderful, brilliant woman, wife, and mother.

Gail is survived by Howard, her husband of 50 years, her children Jason and Amy, her son-in-law Pierre-Yves, and her brothers Dan, Mike, Bob and Ted, as well as her seventeen nieces and nephews and countless other relatives, friends, and neighbors. We love you, Mom.

Working with Gail at Blackrock made many memorial days who was a joy to work with for many years. Our friendship went beyond work to fun lunches and even building gingerbread houses at the holidays. Always in my thoughts and truly missed.
