Gary Curto Obituary

Gary Curto

Aged 77, Gary "Garch" Curto passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Rosa, surrounded by his family. Gary was born and raised in San Francisco, graduating from Balboa High School. Preceding Gary in death were his parents John and Pearl Curto and his children Gary Jr. and Vicky Curto-Lyle. Gary is survived by loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Rebecca; loved by his children Deanna Paynter (Chip), Chris Curto (Stacy) and Sue Cowles (Paul); cherished by his grandchildren Frankie (Denita), Sarah, Jacob, Grace, Joshua, Alicia (Chris), Michael, Nicole, Eric and Miranda and 5 great-grandchildren Nina, Maya, Drew, Cheyenne and Paisley. He also leaves behind his loving sister-in-law Billie Potts (Warren) and brother-in-law Michael Dailey (Barry).
Gary dedicated his entire career to public service. He joined the Army in 1956, then the reserves and finally beginning in 1961, served Daly City and San Francisco as a fireman. He retired from the SF Fire dept. as a lieutenant after 38 years of service.
Gary's greatest joy was being with his family, cooking, playing games, having fun and laughing. He also found great pleasure in all types of sports. In 1983 while serving at Station 12 of the SF Fire Dept. he founded the Kaiser Memorial Fantasy Football League. In his honor it is now named the Gary Curto Kaiser Memorial Football League and is one of the longest running leagues in the state. He volunteered for the Northern CA Golf Assoc. for over two decades serving 8 years on the Board of Directors. He loved working the tournaments for junior golfers. He enjoyed genealogy research and was a member of Star of the Valley Catholic Church. Our family will always be grateful for Gary's presence in our lives.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Sat., March 19th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Star of the Valley Catholic Church, 495 White Oak Dr., Santa Rosa, CA 95409. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made to support the NCGA junior golf program; Youth on Course, 3200 Lopez Rd., Pebble Beach, CA 93953 or www.youthoncourse.org

I worked "Garch" in Daly City and again we were classmates at the tower in SF. He was always a gentleman and pleasure to be with. An avid golfer you could find him on a golf course somewhere. I have great memories of Gary and wish his family well Jim Scott

Gary Curto, a multi-talented friend, co-worker, golf partner, and simply an extraordinary individual will be always in my fondest memories. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to Becky and the entire Curto clan. His physical suffering is now in the past, yet the mental images of his love of life will be a source of joy for all who knew and loved him.

Our hearts go out to you, Becky, and family, at this time of great sorrow. I had the pleasure of working with Gary at Station 12 SFFD for many years and consider him a "true brother" in every sense of the word. Gary, our leader in our Fantasy Football league, will truly be missed. "God Speed Dear Brother"...Rich & Janet Sarlatte
