as we approach two years since the untimely demise of my childhood bestie, I find myself thinking of the great times we had had together as children. those were indeed the BEST OF TIMES. And I think of the CHILDISH times we spent together as CUNY schoolmates making prank phony phone calls using our "real" Irish accents ..... and oh, do I think of that TEACUP .... Surely Patrick FitzPatrick must be loving it too, wherever on earth or in the heavens he must be! GARY, surely you and I are on a collision course for a third stint together! Here´s a toast to the greatest combo ASTROPHYSICIST / EDUCATOR of all-time! till we meet again

May his memory be for a blessing. I learned today that Gary has passed away. I found Gary to be engaging and intelligent during our many dozens of work-related discussions in the early 1980s (at his lovely home and by telephone, about perhaps co-creating his very first test-prep software product, although we ultimately did not collaborate).

I'm filled with sorrow to learn today, Dec 7, 2020, that Gary passed away last year. He was six years older than I, a close friend to my older brother, Kent Gabler, in the Bronx. I've known Gary since I was 15. He was kind, generous, joyful and so funny as well as serious when it was necessary. I live in New York and hadn't seen Gary for many years after he moved to CA. But through phone calls and emails, his luminous qualities and heartfelt interest in my life and my writing reached me across the miles. He even wrote to editors he knew at two large publishers to try to help me traditionally publish my self-published short stories. This is just one example of his kindness, earnestness and generous spirit. I wondered why he didn't respond to my efforts to contact him this past year, and my growing fears have been borne out. But I am so uplifted that Gary found a loving family when he married Raquel. He had sent me photos of Raquel and her family over the years, and I saw the joy in all their faces. I knew he found a family who adored him, and that made me so happy for him. The gift of Raquel and her family and of course his daughter, son and grandchild made the second half of his life golden. It is what I will remember whenever I think of him. He will be missed by so many and yet be here with all of us. --Ina Claire Gabler.

So saddened when I read the painful news Gary & I were childhood best friends and classmates in the 40s at P.S.86 in the Bronx, and then good friends again as we re-connected at CCNY. I always cherished our friendship throughout the decades of our lives. I will never ever forget how we so often communicated using our Irish accents and some of our private jokes, most especially the one involving a TEACUP. Gary, you are surely sorely missed. Some day, I am certain we will be re-united. Till then . . . . . . . . . . . .
