Just had the honor of visiting Alacatraz and San Francisco a little over a week ago and decided to buy some books. One of which was Murders on Alcatraz. What an amazing memior this book is about your loved ones journey in this famous prison, so glad to get to "know" him through this book. and condolences, I'm sure he is missed!

I didn't know George but I knew people who did. They always spoke well of him. He was well respected.

Geoge was a wonderful man. I really enjoyed working with him in Customs. I also enjoyed seeing him on Alcatraz and reading his book.

It was both a pleasure and an honor to know and work with George during my career with US Customs. He was a unique individual to say the least and a true San Franciscan in every sense. All of us there will always remember with warmth and friendship and great admiration. Thanks for all the wonderful memories my friend. May God Bless you and keep you.

May George Rest in Peace
He was one of my most memorable supervisors while I was working for U.S. Customs (Legacy Customs) at the Customshouse in San Francisco or at the San Francisco Airport. George would arrive early to work, and prior to start time, would be reading the S.F. Chronicle stock pages, to determine how his drug store investment was doing. After reading the paper, his reaction would let me know how our morning would go. If he neatly folded the section, it was a very positive indicator it would be a good one.
When I would complete a report that needed his signature, I would turn around and hand it to him, as my working space was in front of his.
I would look at his finger to gaze upon a magnificent ring. A gorgeous star Safire ring. Oh, how that star would sparkle. One day he shared, he had it in a safety deposit box, as it was left by his family. That ring, so resembled George as his eyes would also sparkle when we chatted about the good ole days at Customs. He was a true gentleman, and I will always have fond remembrances of him. When I needed a ride into the City from the airport, he wouldn't just drop me off at a bus stop, he would give me a lift to the house in Park Presidio, which was a bit out of his way from the Marina District.
He was a mentor and a wonderful person who lived a long and fruitful life. God bless him

Sorry for your loss, he must be one of the last guy from the days at Alcatraz. Loved hearing his stories.

George was one of the last Alcatraz officers still around... even the dependents (children and other family members) are at an advanced age.
I think it was George who said on his first day on the job, he had an inmate shanked in front of him by another inmate, Not a typical day but the Island seemingly was living up to its reputation...

We were so saddened to hear of George´s passing. We are so grateful to have shared in your life. Family dinners and holidays. Sharing meals and fun times when we visited The City. Your generous hospitality when we stayed with you during these visits. Our private tour of Alcatraz you arranged and the many coffee get together at the Coffee Roaster on Chestnut added to our trips. Our last visit with you was filled with laughter and special memories. We were so looking forward to our trip in March. I will miss our phone visits and your laugh!
