George Glushenok

(1941-2013)

Died Thursday morning, April 25, following a long and courageous struggle with a rare disease called myelofibrosis. George was born on Manhattan where his family resided until they moved to Jackson, New Jersey, where they were heavily involved in a Russian-American community known as Rova Farms. Following graduation from Lakewood Highschool in 1959, George attended Rutgers University, where he was awarded the BA degree. He obtained a. Masters Degree in Russian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Wis) in 1968 and then obtained a teaching position in the Russian Department at Emory University, in Atlanta. After earning a Masters Degree in library science at Emory he took a position as a librarian at Georgia Tech University, in Atlanta. In 1976 he, with his life partner, moved to Palo Alto in the Bay Area, seeking new career opportunities, eventually obtaining a Reference position at the San Francisco Public Library (Main). He also served in responsible managerial positions in various public libraries on the San Francisco Peninsula, including the South San Francisco, Sunnyvale and Redwood City libraries. George retired in 2006, but continued working as a part timer in the Menlo Park and San Mateo libraries until shortly before his death. George is survived by his younger sister, Lydia Davis and family, by his older sister, Alice Wybernac and family, and by his devastated Life Partner of 46 years, Robert Mayer. George lived with a terrible disease for twenty years, but did so with incredible dignity and grace. It was a long and rich life of work and travel, always pursued with high energy and commitment. He leaves behind the legacy of a true librarian's love of books and intellectual culture.
