George Maloney Obituary

George William Maloney

"George William Maloney passed away in Fairfax on August 4, 2019 at age 75 after a fabulous, eventful life. He was born in San Francisco to William P. and Marian (McLaughlin) Maloney on April 11, 1944 in the great neighborhood of Eureka Valley.
He was the second of four children, Maureen Maloney (Franzen) deceased, Carole Maloney and James Maloney. After Most Holy Redeemer Grammar School, he attended St. Ignatius High School where he graduated as Student Body President in 1962. George then attended St. Joseph's Seminary, where as they say, 'he stayed for a cup of tea,' but met many lifelong friends, as he also did at Holy Redeemer and S.I. He then in short order became a night watchman at S.F. General Hospital through the graciousness of his Uncle Ed McLaughlin; joined the National Guard; passed the entrance test to S.F. State (where it eventually took him 7 years to receive his Secondary Teaching Credential in Industrial Arts)."
Please note the above was written by George, a true obituary aficionado. The following finishes what he started.
George served in the San Francisco Fire Department for 36 years, retiring as an Assistant Chief in 2003. George loved being a firefighter, especially the lifelong friendships and camaraderie of the job. Those who knew him were blessed to hear the myriad of firehouse stories and were exposed to the true art of storytelling.
After his retirement, George filled his time volunteering, playing bocce, and enjoying life with his family and friends.
Other than his family, one of George's greatest accomplishments was his over 46 years of sobriety. In A.A. he not only helped himself, but tirelessly helped others with his nonjudgmental personality, quiet listening skills, and sage advice.
George was married to the love of his life Barbara (Brunero) for almost 52 years. He is also survived by his beloved children, Michael (Elizabeth), Daniel (Suzanne), and daughter Lynn. He is predeceased by his son Matthew who passed away in 2016. George loved his grandchildren Cabot, Emma, Ben, Lincoln, Parker, Annabelle, and Charlotte and included his nephews Casey and Kevin Maloney as if they too were his own. He was so loved by his sisters-in-law Connie Cappa, Sherry Maloney and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
George was a true gentleman and knew nothing but love for others. He touched the lives of so many, and his selfless attitude and exceptionally positive approach to life impacted everyone who crossed his path.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kaiser San Rafael. We appreciate all your loving care for George.
A funeral Mass will be held on 11:00 a.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Fairfax with a celebration at the parish hall next door immediately following the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to SVdP/St. Rita Chapter,

Only recently having learned of George's passing in August, i send condolences to the family with two stories; 1) George's Mom was my 5th-grade teacher at St. Pauls Grammar School; 2) in '69 when I moved my family to Fairfax, George and I reconnected from EV days friendship. Cheers, Geo!

I remember George from the time I coached one of his sons in the Fairfax Youth Soccer League. As a soccer parent, George was always a consummate gentleman and fun to be around. I really enjoyed our interactions and am truly sad to read of his passing. My condolences to Barbara, Michael, Dan and Lynn.

Condolences to the Maloney family.
George and I worked together in a real estate office during the 1990s.
He always had a great outlook on everything.
I enjoyed seeing him in and around Fairfax over the years.

Remember you George when my sister Sandy and Mike Ahrens moved to San Anselmo with their children Jeff and Lisa. Didn't know you well but remember you and your red hair and family. May you rest in peace and that your family remember the good times and memories and know one day you will all be together again. God Bless you all.

I knew George during my growing up years, and went to Most Holy Redeemer elementary school with him, from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Always friendly, willing to help and an all-sround nice guy.

I am so very sorry to hear of George's passing. I met him through my son Ryan McAdams, who is a friend of Lynnie's. When Ryan let me know George had died, his smile and his face came immediately to mind although I haven't seen him in over 20 years. I was fortunate to attend a holiday party at his home one Christmas years ago and spent a good bit of time talking to him. He was so kind and generous with his time and his wisdom. I send my heartfelt prayers to the family.

I knew George through his younger brother, Jim. Being about 14 years older, George virtually raised Jim and I've never seen two closer brothers. George was a consummate gentleman and never took himself too seriously, although many of the jobs he held were deadly serious. He would be the first with a hilarious story and seemed to have a permanent twinkle in his eye. First and foremost with George was his family, to whom he has passed on his intelligence, humor, and fidelity. Godspeed, George, and may the road rise to meet you.

George "Red" Maloney was a class act & a classic. The photo you see is George thru & thru, one big great smile. I had the privilege of knowing Geroge from an early age. We both belonged to the Columbia Park Boys Club & were members of the Boys Club Glee Club. The leader placed George & I in the front row since we both looked very Irish. We had a duet we used to sing but for the life of me can't remember the name of the song. We met again in high school, unfortunately, George went to S.I & I went to S.H.WE saw each other over the years & even though we lived miles apart I considered George a very good friend all these years. My heart goes out to Barb & family. Sending our love & prayers from Arizona. Rest in peace ole buddy, heaven is gaining a great one. Love & friendship.
