George Christian Meyer III
05/27/1940 - 09/27/2025
George Christian Meyer III, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025 at the age of 85. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all.
Chris was born on May 27, 1940, in Great Neck, New York, to George Christian Meyer Jr. and Esther Paine Blodgett Meyer. The oldest of four, Chris went to the Buckley Country Day School where he made many lifelong friends. While he loved organized sports, stick ball was his childhood obsession- he was deadly on the mound, with spot-on impersonations of major league pitchers. Summers spent in Swampscott, MA, fishing, playing tennis, golf and sailing on his beloved grandfather's 1938, Herreshoff-designed schooner, The Mistral.
He attended boarding school in Massachusetts, at St. Mark's (class of '58) where he played on the varsity soccer and tennis teams. He followed in the footsteps of many in his family, including his father, and attended Yale University. While at Yale he was a member of Zeta Psi. In 1962 he graduated with a BA in History.
After college Chris worked in the family real-estate development firm, Cord Meyer Development Company before being accepted to Navy OCS in Newport, RI. Based out of Mayport, FL, Chris was a Repair Officer and Fire Marshall on the U.S.S. Saratoga aircraft carrier. He spent most of his tour in the Mediterranean, where he enjoyed many memorable shore leaves. Chris was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant in 1973.
Upon returning home in 1965, Chris rejoined the family's real estate development company in Queens, NY, while also earning an MBA in Finance from Columbia University (1969).
In 1967 he met Bailey Logan of California at an event in Manhattan. A few months later, thinking it was a different Chris, she accepted an invitation to the Yale v. Dartmouth game. The mix-up worked out, they had a great time, married nine months later, and were happily together for over fifty-seven years.
A year after their first son, Christian Logan Meyer, was born, Chris's growing family moved from New York City to San Francisco. The promise of year-round golf and the opportunity to reconnect with his beloved Giants made the move to Bailey's home turf more enticing. He often relayed that it was the best move of his life.
Soon after arriving in San Francisco, his second son, Nicholas Bailey Meyer arrived. From their new home, Chris took the bus downtown to his new job in the Trust Investment Department at Crocker Bank.
After the family moved to the peninsula in 1982, Chris switched careers, got his Series Seven, and joined Hambrecht & Quist. He enjoyed success and camaraderie at the tech-focused investment bank. Now working market hours, a late lunch downtown with friends or a game of squash often ended the day. For Chris, business partnerships and big family decisions or milestones warranted a seafood lunch behind the closed curtains of a Sam's booth.
In the mid-eighties, he joined the Cord Meyer Development Board where he served as a valued director for over forty years, until stepping down in 2024. Chris was a deeply involved director and provided steady counsel and continuity over the course of four CEO's and significant portfolio transformation. Chris also joined the board of Grace Cathedral and was an Associate supporter of UCSF Saint Francis Hospital. He also served on committees and boards of clubs to which he belonged.
Chris stayed with H&Q through the Chase acquisition but the magic was gone with the larger corporate ways of working, and he decided to move on. After a few stops at smaller investment advisory firms he joined Stifel Financial in 2014; he retired from there in 2022, at the young age of 82; coincidently, at the same building, One Montgomery, where he started his career at Crocker Bank over 50 years prior.
Career and the stock market were a constant focus, but there was always time for sports- golf, tennis, squash, fishing and skiing among others. From backgammon to bridge and dominos, Chris loved table games and won multiple domino club championships at the San Francisco Golf Club, Pacific Union Club and Burlingame Country Club. As a member of the US Seniors' Golf Association (USSGA), Chris traveled with Bailey to many special courses across the country. They frequently played mixed tournaments together and enjoyed visiting international golf destinations over the course of their travels.
Chris and Bailey loved to travel, and saw the world together going on many memorable trips with friends and family; visiting over 50 countries and every continent but Antarctica.
Grandkids had a real hold on Chris and almost nothing gave him more joy than taking family trips with them; though watching one of his three grandchildren from the sidelines of a basketball court, a soccer field or a baseball diamond came close. Chris adored his dogs, and his latest, Miley, was always at his side, right up to the end.
Chris is survived by his wife, Bailey Logan Meyer; his sons Logan Meyer, of Dallas, TX, and Nicholas Meyer and wife, Misty, of San Francisco; his grandchildren, Chase, Reed, and Lila Meyer; his dear siblings Anne Wood of Swampscott, MA, Holly Humphries of Franklin, NH, and Nick Meyer of Essex Junction, VT, and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris's memory can be made to the
charity of your choice.
