George Riley Obituary

George A. Riley

George A. Riley of San Francisco, California, formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, age 59, died on June 8, 2016, after a determined and courageous fourteen-month battle with leukemia. He will be deeply missed by his sister, Peggy Thomson (Tim) of Germantown, Tennessee; his brother, John Riley (Maryellen) of Arlington Heights, Illinois; and his six nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Frances Riley and Dr. George A. Riley, both physicians in Memphis for many years.

George was born on March 9, 1957, and grew up in Memphis. In 1975, he graduated from Whitehaven High School, where he was an active student leader for civil rights causes—a commitment to justice and public service he maintained throughout his life. George attributed that commitment to his chance meeting, as a young boy, with civil rights activist James Meredith shortly before Meredith was shot on June 6, 1966, while marching from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi.

In 1979, George graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and began working with consumer advocate Ralph Nader. During that time, George and Carl J. Mayer co-authored the book Public Domain, Private Dominion: A History of Public Mineral Policy in America, about land use regulation by the Department of the Interior. In 1983, George graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was instrumental in establishing the Harvard Fellowship in Public Interest Law.

After law school, George returned to Memphis to clerk for the Honorable Judge Bailey Brown (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit). In the mid-1980's, George moved to San Francisco, where he became special assistant to the San Francisco City Attorney and handled many of the city's most significant cases, including an action to open a local social club's membership to women and minorities.

In 1993, George joined the San Francisco office of O'Melveny & Myers, an international law firm, becoming a prominent partner and one of the country's top intellectual property litigators. Known for his inexhaustible preparation and his eloquence in the courtroom, George was an invaluable global advisor to many iconic companies, including Apple, Samsung and Tesla. He shared an extremely special bond with Apple founder Steve Jobs and his family. George's high-profile clientele never diminished his commitment to the less fortunate. He donated hundreds of hours working with the Mississippi Center for Justice to help individuals displaced by Hurricane Katrina and others who faced seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Throughout his life, George's love of running fueled his participation in countless long-distance races, creating many lasting friendships along the way. A cherished friend to so many, George always carved out time in his demanding schedule to counsel them on personal matters and share his passions for classical and sacred music, literature and Civil War history.

Despite traveling the world, George's humility and Southern grace never waned. He returned to Memphis every February to run his favorite race, the Mike Cody Four Mile Classic, benefiting Rhodes College. George's premature passing is a tremendous loss to all who knew him. He defined generosity in mind, body and soul.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, at 1 p.m. in the auditorium at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art (1934 Poplar Avenue) with a reception to follow. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Mississippi Center for Justice at mscenterforjustice.org.

George Riley was truly the most extraordinary person I have ever known. He was the kindest, most thoughtful, gentle, and brilliant soul. We met in Memphis while I was there as a Travel Nurse and became very close friends. We had a very close relationship for a few years and I learned so much from him. I think of him very often and miss being able to call him and spend time with him. We traveled a lot together and experienced many amazing things. I can honestly say no one has ever been so genuinely nice and caring to me in my entire life. He was in a league of his own. He was truly an amazing human being. I will never forget him. He will live on in my heart forever.
I had a son in March of 2020, 10 days after George's birthday. I honored his memory by naming my son after him, with the middle name Riley. One day I will explain to my son where his middle name came from and the extraordinary person that George Riley truly was.

It's January 2020 and I'm teaching a course titled Political & Civil Rights this Spring Semester at the University of Mississippi Law School. I will advise my students that the fictional Atticus Finch -- whom many are encouraged to see as a role model - doesn't hold a candle to George Riley. And I'll tell them about George. I was the court-appointed monitor supervising the compliance of the City of San Francisco and its Fire Department with a broad civil rights consent decree that, among other things, brought the first women into the Department.

It's three years now that we have lost George and I am still very sad. I have moved on from O'Melveny to another law firm in a similar position I had with George. It is so apparent all the things I learned from George that has made me the best assistant I can be today. I truly miss George very single day and I find it especially hard during the months of May and June. You are forever in my thoughts, George.

I don't know why I do this to myself but once in a while, I read George's Obituary again. It is over two years since George has passed and I miss him every day. I am still an Assistant at O'Melveny and while I do work with some great attorneys, no one is like George. My heart still hurts in San Francisco.

It is nearly six months since George has passed and I still miss him everyday. I was George's Assistant for six and half years ... we would be celebrating our seventh year anniversary in December. I was so blessed to have worked for not just an amazing attorney, but an amazing human being. I am not sure how I keep going these days, but I am always thinking of you, George.

George and I played old James Taylor songs in high school. He was a talented guitarist. I heard from him a couple of years ago but did not know he was sick. He was a great guy with a big heart. The world will miss him

I was visiting with Ed Sharpe, a fellow parishioner at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Oxford, MS. He casually referenced his teaching years at Whitehaven H.S. and I asked if he ever knew Peggy, George, or John Riley. He asked if I knew George had died. Came home tonight and looked up the obituary. First, I send my sympathy to Peggy and John. Their mother hosted my 21st birthday gathering at their home with my mother, their great-aunt, getting a reprieve from her stay at Baptist Hospital in Memphis where she was under the care of George, Sr. It catches my breath that my mother and George, Jr. both died at age 59 and both from leukemia. May the peace of the Lord be with you Peggy and John and families. Cousin Donald

George and I co-authored a book on the history of public lands in America. He was very dedicated and devoted in completing the book. His commitment to improving the commonweal stretched back to his time at Princeton where he was a leader in the anti-apartheid movement on campus. Many of his fellow students are saddened by the loss of someone who so consistently worked for others in his time on earth.

George was my second-semester second sophomore year Princeton roommate. He was one of the most intellectually curious and modest classmates I knew; I think he was the first person who studied entirely for the love of what he was learning and not the grades. My GPA blossomed just being in the same room with him.

I wish I had known he had returned to the Bay Area.

I learned that George Riley passed away and I am stunned and saddened at the loss of such a truly exceptional lawyer and person.
I've had the very good fortune to spend time on some matters with this very unassuming, and incredibly brilliant person who quickly became my favorite outside counsel. He reminded me of Atticus Finch, well spoken, gentle in his delivery, yet passionate about his beliefs.
My goodness, what a tremendous void for his loved ones; his firm O'Melveny & Meyers and his very, very fortunate and loyal clients.
I am confident that all clients that he counseled; those that were that were the grateful recipients of his incisive legal advice and quiet demeanor will definitely miss him, indeed.

George and I grew up in Whitehaven together and hung out at the Y MCA. He was always a kind and polite and caring man. George always put himself out there for causes he believed in and will always be respected and remembered for his efforts. Dear John and Peggy I know how difficult it is to lose a sibling my thoughts and prayers are with you both.

George was the attorney who accompanied me on my first ever legal deposition. I was young, scared and really feared I'd fail. He was masterful at keeping the proceedings on-track and defending me from attacks from the "other side".

Fast forward a number of years (and depositions) and I'm in court testifying for Apple and when I finish my testimony, George (who I didn't know was in the courtroom) approached me and said, "I wish we'd have video taped that testimony as we'd use it to train other witnesses on how to deal with a hostile attorney". All I could say was, "I learned from the best"... and he was the best. He'll be badly missed.

My love, thoughts and prayers are with you, John and Peggy, and your families.
I have thought about George often in the 42 years since I last saw him. My high school prom date, but he was so much more. A beautiful soul, a lovely person, an exceptional man, a man for all seasons. My life was made richer, lovelier and more beautiful because of him. We shared a love of classical music. He introduced me to my first opera, "Madame Butterfly".
I know there are so many people whose lives he touched and made better who could share their memories, but I for one am grateful for the privilege of knowing him. I will never forget him.
God Bless you and your families, John and Peggy, you are in my prayers.

It was such a blessing to know George. The Sutton Family always had such admiration for George and the Riley Family. I was so fortunate to see George at the Whitehaven High School Reunion last year. He was still the intelligent, nice and humble George from my childhood. Our community was so proud of George! Our prayers and love go out to the family!

George Riley was my friend since we were sophomores in college 40 years ago. He was a remarkable human being. Brilliant, beyond comparison. And no one worked harder -- everyone who knew him or worked with him knows that -- because he was driven to make an significant positive impact in the world. In his heart he cared fiercely about justice and civil rights; the South where he came from, and especially its poorest citizens; his family, and so many people whom he helped in so many ways. It is very sad to lose George when he had so many more important battles to fight and win. We will have to fight and win them in his memory and honor.

George was the coach of my high school mock trial team. I was the sponsor. And we won the city championship in Memphis ! George did a fantastic job. He was also a counselor in high school at the YMCA day camp held on my property back in 1973. And he was very efficient. God rest his soul. He was a fabulous person.

George will be greatly missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. And although George took a few days to rest in peace, I'm quite sure he is once again burning the midnight oil going over all of God's intellectual property cases in between his humanitarian causes and running. But that would be George's heaven.

Rest in Peace George,

I will always remember George, not only as an extraordinarily talented lawyer (from whom I learned a lot), but as a decent and compassionate human being. I still remember the 1991 East Bay hills fire, when George immediately dropped everything, got a shovel and ran up to the fire lines to help. He will be missed.
