Grant Inman Obituary

Grant Muir Inman
December 30, 1941 - June 25, 2022
Grant Muir Inman (age 80) passed away at his home in Orinda, CA on June 25th, 2022, due to complications from cancer. He was born December 30, 1941 to Harold and Julia Inman in Portland, OR before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. Grant graduated from Piedmont High School in 1959 where he was active in athletics, and from the University of Oregon (BA Economics) in 1964 where he was Vice President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Grant attended Reserve Officer Candidate School and served as an officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. He served two tours in Southeast Asia from 1964-1967. In 1969, Grant received his MBA from the University of California, Berkeley in Finance.
Grant was truly one of the early pioneers of venture capital. He began his career as a General Partner of Becker Technological Associates in New York City. From 1974-1985, he was a General Partner of WestVen Management and Hambrecht & Quist venture capital groups. In 1985, Grant was co-founder and General Partner of Inman & Bowman, a west coast private venture capital partnership based in Orinda, CA. In 1998, Grant formed Inman Investment Management, where he worked until his recent death. During his time as a venture capitalist, he served on the board of directors for many private and public companies. His focus and enjoyment came from mentoring young entrepreneurs to help them succeed in the competitive Bay Area business environment. Grant touched so many lives. His kindness, compassion and love will live in our hearts and thoughts always.
Grant was a supporter of the University of California Athletic Department and Haas Business School and the University of Oregon Business School. He served as a Trustee of the University of California Berkeley Foundation and the University of Oregon Foundation Board of Trustees. He received the University of California Wheeler Oak Award and Chancellor's Award and was past President of the San Francisco Grid Club.
Grant was a lifelong golfer. He was a past President of Claremont Country Club in Oakland, CA and was a long-time member of the San Francisco Golf Club. He also enjoyed his time with his campmates at the Bohemian Grove. Grant loved spending time with his family and friends at his house on Lake Tahoe and at his Orinda home as all five grandchildren lived minutes away from their "Paw".
Grant was loved and cherished by his wife of 56 years, Suanne Bonner Inman and his children and their spouses, Corie and Craig Hunt and Michael and Kelly Inman. He was "Paw" to Adrian, Julia and Henry Hunt and Emma and Lily Inman whom he adored. He was the beloved brother of Steven Inman and sister of the late Gail Inman Hallgren, and he had many loved nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations being made to the Cal Athletic Fund (195 Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, 94720), Oak Tree Foundation (5295 Broadway Terrace, Oakland, 94618) or the charity of your choice.

Grant was my "big brother " in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. As a freshman in the fall of 1962, I was paired with Grant, a Senior. I don´t remember one specific situation or incident, but my overall recollection of Grant was of being very mature, and he was able to successfully guide me through that freshman year. He knew who he was, a person of integrity and honor. I always remembered him fondly for getting me off on the right foot in college. My condolences to his family and especially Sueanne.

I met Grant at Piedmont High School. I was a freshman and he was junior. We ran track together. He pulled me into his high school fraternity. A wonderful mentor. Later when I arrived at the University of Oregon, he again was a junior and I was a freshman. I joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity because of him. A very caring individual both socially and academically. We had stayed in touch during our service years and long into our professional business careers. A wonderfully caring family man, Grant will certainly be missed by many.

Having known Grant from our early days growing up he would come out to my parents home in Lafayette several times during the summer months to swim. He was always a take charge guy and whatever games we played he was always the winner. It was not until the early days at H&Q that we met again and worked together on many deals . Grant was highly respected and always cared about those he knew. He never hesitated to get involved in projects that nobody else felt had any chance of success. A true Professional and a guy who enjoyed life to the fullest and will be missed by all . Rest In Peace my friend..

I've shared many rounds of golf with "Grunskie" and also shared a mutual love of dachshunds. I will greatly miss the old boy and he always brightened my day.
